Message from the Principal

Good afternoon Puma Families,

We did it! Our first week of school is officially in the books! It has been wonderful having our students back in the building and seeing our school community come to life again.

This week was all about learning and growing together. Our students learned new routines and expectations, practiced what it means to be part of their classroom communities, and began building relationships that will carry us throughout the year. And as adults, we learned a lot too—about our students, our new routines, and the little adjustments that will help us continue to get better each day.

Thank you for the care, patience, flexibility, and energy you brought to this first week. From morning arrival to classroom instruction to dismissal, it truly takes all of us working together to make Powell a place where our students feel welcomed, supported, and excited to learn.

I hope you leave this week feeling proud of what we accomplished together. Week one is done, and we are off to a wonderful start!

Have a restful and well-deserved weekend!

Warmly,

Catherine Han
Principal

🍎 Lunch Visitor Policy Reminder

When can families visit for lunch?

  • Families are welcome to join your child during their lunch time to celebrate your child's birthday or half- birthday. Please select one. 🎉
  •  If the child’s birthday falls on a weekend or holiday, special guests can celebrate lunch with them one day the following week when we are back in school.
  • We invite two (2) special guests (parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, etc.) to join their child for lunch at school on their birthday.
  • We will be welcoming families to join their child for lunch to celebrate their special day starting on September 22nd. This will allow our students to learn cafeteria routines and expectations during the first month of school.
  • Lunch is an impertive time for your child to learn social skills, connect with friends and develop independence at school.

Important Reminders:

✅ Parents/guardians welcome after the first month of school

✅ Lunch drop-offs are still allowed — place on the outside table by the main office, label with their teacher and students name.

✅ Email your child’s teacher by 9:30 AM if dropping off lunch

✅ Make sure your child knows to pick it up

Thank you for helping us keep lunch times safe, smooth, and special!

Parent Digital Consent

Remember to Complete Permission Forms for School Resources

Families can now easily grant consent for their children to access a variety of school resources through the Parent Digital Consent system. This online tool can be accessed using your SIS ParentVUE account login. Parents can easily opt their child in or out of a variety of resources, including online educational tools, school counseling services, and more.

Visit the Parent Digital Consent webpage to access the system. Watch this video to see how to use the tool

Opt In or Out to Student Devices Being Sent Home for Grades 1-6

New this year, families can opt out of having student laptops sent home with their student.

  • If you do not want your student to bring their FCPS-issued device home, please toggle the Opt Out button to a check mark and confirm by pressing Save Selection.
  • If you would like your student to bring their FCPS device home, no toggle action is needed. Confirm by pressing Save Selection.

Students whose families opt out will continue to have access to an FCPS-issued device during the school day. Please reach out to your student’s teacher to understand expectations for homework and any learning activities that may require access to technology outside of the school day.

Find Opportunities and Register as a Volunteer

Through Volunteer FCPS, individuals can register and search for volunteer opportunities across the school division. All volunteers need to register in Volunteer FCPS. This includes FCPS staff who volunteer at their child’s school, work as student mentors, or help in any unpaid capacity in the school system. However, staff who wish to volunteer at the school where they work do not need to register.

Visit Volunteer FCPS to view volunteering and mentorship opportunities.

  • Click on “Schools” to register with a specific school.
  • Click on “Programs” to register as a general volunteer with the county or with the MentorWorks program, which matches individuals with students to meet regularly throughout the year.

Register and complete a short volunteer orientation.

If you’ve registered previously, no need to register again. But visit Volunteer FCPS to sign up for opportunities of interest!

Library News

We need volunteers to help shelve books each morning from 9:15-10:15 am. I will train you on how we shelve books in our library. So, don't be nervous if you have little or no experience. Shelving can be a great way to get a quiet hour and meet other Powell parents. Fill out this form to share your interest. Have specific questions? Email Mrs. Sejas: masejas@fcps.edu.

Student ID Cards

Student ID Cards for Colin Powell Bus Riders

We will begin distributing student ID cards to all our students who ride the school bus or use FCPS transportation services.

Students who have student ID cards should begin tapping as they board and exit the bus. Only students who use FCPS transportation services will be provided with a student ID card at this time.

We ask for your patience! Bus drivers will begin checking in students next week and may need some extra time at each bus stop while they do this. The transportation team is working hard to minimize any potential delays.

Learn more about the bus navigation and student ID cards.
