Fairfax County Public Schools 2025-2026 Standard School Year Calendar

Message from the Principal

Dear Powell Puma Families,

As we close out the month of May and prepare to welcome June, it is hard to believe how quickly the school year is moving along. Although this was a shorter week due to the holiday weekend, it was wonderful to have our students back in the building. Even in just a few days together, our classrooms were filled with learning, laughter, and excitement.

We are entering one of the busiest and most memorable times of the school year. Over the next few weeks, students will continue engaging in important learning experiences, celebrations, end-of-year activities, and opportunities to reflect on all they have accomplished this year. We are so proud of the growth our students have shown academically, socially, and emotionally.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support throughout the school year. Your encouragement at home and collaboration with our staff make such a difference for our students and school community.

We hope everyone had a restful Memorial Day weekend, and we look forward to a strong and positive finish to the school year together.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Warmly,

Catherine Han
Principal

📝 Important Reminder: Early Pick-Up Protocol

To ensure a safe, smooth, and uninterrupted dismissal process for all students, please remember our protocol for early pick-ups:

  • Notify Us Early: If you need to pick your student up before the end of the school day, please email their teacher and CC our attendance email (colinpowellelem.attendance@fcps.edu) by 10:00 AM on the day of the early dismissal.
  • Final Cut-Off Time: The last early pick-up window of the day ends promptly at 3:30 PM. After 3:30 students will be dismiss their regular dismissal route.

Following these guidelines minimizes disruptions to valuable instructional time and helps our staff ensure that every child gets where they need to be safely. Thank you so much for your cooperation and your continued support in keeping our dismissal procedures safe and efficient!

Kiss n’ Ride 2026-27 School Year

We are introducing an updated protocol to Kiss and Ride to enhance safety, improve traffic flow, and ensure a more efficient experience for all families.

Beginning 2026-2027 school year, Kiss and Ride numbers will be limited to only out-of-boundary students. New Kiss and Ride numbers will be issued to eligible families, so current placards will need to be discarded. Once assigned, the numbers will remain with the student for the duration of their enrollment at the school.

As a reminder, during arrival and dismissal times:

  • All drivers are expected to follow staff directions at all times.
  • The Kiss & Ride line CLOSES at 9:15 AM. Parents arriving after 9:15 AM must park and escort students to the main office to sign them in.
  • Vehicles should pull forward as far as possible before stopping to maximize lane capacity.
  • Drivers must remain in their vehicles and may not leave them unattended.
  • Students should enter and exit vehicles from the passenger side only.
  • Families are encouraged to have students ready to exit the vehicle promptly upon arrival with their belongings prepared in advance.
  • During pick-up, please ensure that the Kiss and Ride tags are clearly displayed on the dashboard.
  • The use of mobile devices should be minimized while in the Kiss and Ride line to ensure full attention to traffic flow and student safety.
  • Parking or passing within the Kiss and Ride lane is strictly prohibited. If additional time or assistance is needed, families are asked to park in a designated parking space.

We appreciate your cooperation and support as we implement these procedures to maintain a safe, orderly, and efficient environment for our school community.

School Board Adopts Fiscal Year 2027 Approved Budget

On May 21, the Fairfax County School Board unanimously adopted the Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Approved Budget, continuing FCPS’ commitment to sustaining excellence by prioritizing competitive compensation and strategic investments that support student success.

The adopted budget reflects the division’s ongoing efforts to navigate a challenging fiscal environment shaped in part by chronic state underfunding and economic uncertainty. Despite these challenges, the budget maintains key investments and restores several reductions made during the prior fiscal year. Read about the FY 2027 Budget.
