Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. People with ancestral roots in Asia and the islands of the Pacific have been integral to the story of America. In 1992, May was designated Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month to celebrate their heritage and contributions.

Mental Health Awareness Month is about more than awareness; it's about showing up for one another. It provides a chance to stand with your community and show that no one struggles alone. Everyone is invited to speak up against mental health stigma. Learn more about Mental Health Awareness Month on the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) website.

Mental Health Awareness Month
Jewish American Heritage Month

May is Jewish American Heritage Month, a national month of recognition of the history of Jewish contributions to American culture, acknowledging the diverse achievement of the Jewish community in the U.S. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.

End-of-Year Information

Attendance

To report unexpected absences, please use the this Attendance Form or call the Edison Academy Office 24 Hour Attendance Line, 703-924-8137, or email us at EdisonAcademy.Attendance@fcps.edu to report the absence. Handwritten notes from parents delivered by students are not encouraged as a method of reporting absences.

Testing attendance

Academies do not receive notice of scheduled activities and testing from base schools. Activities, testing, and all other absences need to be reported directly by parents/guardians to the Academy so they can be recorded correctly on the Academy side. Use the links and information above to report attendance. This is true for all base schools (including Edison High School).

End of year attendance

  • Seniors: Your attendance for final exams, senior activities, and graduation will be automatically entered in SIS based on your base school's schedule. You do not need to report attendance for these days.
  • Underclass feeder students: Report any absences through June 4, the last day of Academy shuttles.
  • Underclass Edison students: Attendance will be marked through the last day of school.

June 4th - Last day for shuttles

Final day for all Edison Academy feeder student shuttles. Due to graduation for Edison High School students on June 5th, there will be no shuttles after June 4th and all feeder students should stay at their base schools.

Please note, starting on Friday, June 5th, parents of feeder students do not need to make attendance calls to Edison Academy for their students as they will only be reporting to their base school for the remainder of the school year.

Financial Obligations

Class Fees: Students taking an Edison Academy course with a class fee should ensure that their class fees are paid as soon as possible. If you have an outstanding class fee, you will be receiving an email reminder in the coming weeks. Fees can be paid anytime by logging into my MySchoolBucks and clicking on "Invoices."

Parking Tickets: Students who have received a parking ticket from Edison High School for parking on school grounds without a valid Edison Academy parking pass should take care of their parking fines as soon as possible. You can pay your parking fines by seeing Mrs. Grimes in the Academy Office.

Please note, both class fees and parking tickets are considered a financial obligation and will be reported to base schools if they go unpaid.

Celebrations

Veterinary Science Skills Challenge

Last week, the following students did a great job representing Edison Academy Veterinary Science classes in the 2026 Veterinary Science Skills Challenge. Congratulations Cadence Behen (Edison High School), who earned 4th Place in the competition. We also want to recognize Emma Frye (West Potomac High School), Isabela Martinez (West Springfield High School) and M. Belen Aquino Isasi (Lake Braddock Secondary School) for their participation and we are really proud of their effort and accomplishments.

Electrical Construction and Engineering Night

Thank you to all of the students, teachers, families, as well as business and community partners who attended our 2025-2026 Electrical Construction and Engineering Induction Ceremony last week. At this event, we celebrated the outgoing seniors and Electrical Crew members. Another part of the ceremony was recognizing the incoming level two and level three students who make up the Electrical Crew with a hard hat ceremony.

This year was special because we not only announced the Edison Academy Electrical Crew for 2026-27 but also the first ever Electrical Crew for Fairfax Academy.

We are incredibly grateful for our partnership with Skillforce and their sponsorship of the hard hats for all 40 of the incoming crew members. It was also nice to have an alumni of the program, Wilber Membreno, speak and inspire the students. We appreciate Mr. Wolfe's dedication to prepare our students for futures in the electrical field.

Congratulations to National Qualifiers for SkillsUSA

We are incredibly proud to announce that three of our standout students have advanced to the 2026 SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. After their success at the state level, these individuals will represent our school on the national stage from June 1–5, competing against the best career and technical education students in the country. Jonathan Ortega Lopez (Justice High School) is competing in Job Skill Demonstrations, Maxwell Hatch (South Lakes High School) is competing in Job Interview, and Mohammed Al-Tawaiti (Bryant High School) will be a Special Event participant on a Construction Project.

If you are interested in helping to reduce the cost of this trip for these students, you can donate here, or email Joseph Wolfe for additional ways to support.

Thank you to our Administrative Professionals

Last week we celebrated our beloved Mrs. Sharon Grimes and Mrs. Jenn Roberts! These incredible administrative professionals provide warm welcomes while also working behind-the-scenes to make a world of difference for our students, staff, and families. Your dedication ensures our staff, students, and families are well taken care of. You are stars!

Bus Driver Appreciation

student on a bus with the driver and the card students signed for them

This week, we handed out signed cards as a huge 'thank you' to our amazing bus drivers. They do so much more than navigate the roads, they keep our students moving safely every day to and from the academy. Without them, our courses would not have the diverse populations of students from across the county. Their dedication to go the extra mile is appreciated!

Around the Academy

Our Criminal Justice students went to the Fairfax Police Academy. Here are some things they learned and experienced:

  • Painsley and other dogs that work to help with explosives and keep us safe. The dogs are trained to detect 19,000 different combinations of explosive chemicals.
  • The speeding simulator "The Convincer" to ensure seat belt safety.
  • The students had a chance to wear “drunk googles” and try doing basic tasks.
  • The Crime Scene Investigation trailer had many things set up to help solve crimes including a super glue machine.

Reminders

Academy Resources

Lanyards

All students who attend Edison Academy, that are not Edison High School students, received an Edison Academy lanyard. It is expected that all feeder Academy students wear their lanyards with Academy ID when entering the building to speed along the entry process with the new weapons detection. If your student needs a replacement Academy ID there is a $5.00 fee and it can be paid through MySchoolBucks.

Recognize Edison Academy Employees

The FCPS CARES Program is an opportunity for families, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. We invite you to submit your story, so we can all acknowledge the good work of FCPS employees at Edison High School Academy. We love our staff members; let's tell them how we feel!
