Every Day Counts at Island Creek!
Help us reach our goal of 4% or less this year!
Attendance is a vital life skill that will benefit your child later in life. It’s a good habit to build now to help them graduate from college on time and routinely report to work on time once they have a career.
By highlighting this important information, we aim to keep our families informed and energized about our collective efforts to encourage regular school attendance

Spotlight on Specials: Art
Thank you to all who attended Authors and Artists night! It was so very nice to see everyone. Between our “island” themed glow in the dark art show and various class projects, we had over 1,500 artworks displayed throughout the building!!! It was so very exciting to see our students share their work proudly with their families. Two weeks later, we had 50+ students who had work on display at the Hayfield pyramid art show. Our “Croc Artists” are truly amazing.
As we begin to approach the end of the school year, we still have so much more to do. Mrs. Rozycki’s classes will be working on still life paintings in 1st and 5th grade, 3rd grade will be creating dot paintings inspired by the work of Australian Aboriginals and they also are completing self-portraits highlighting their individual cultures. 4th grade will paint landscapes based on their knowledge of characteristics of Virginia’s five regions. Following, there will be work with textiles for all grades and a “catch up” for 4th grade involving wire sculptures.
In Mr. Korrow's classes, Kindergarten and 2nd grade students are in the early stages of developing their observational drawing skills as we build toward finishing the year with observational painting. In addition, our 2nd and 6th graders are working through exciting ceramics projects, while 6th grade will wrap up the year exploring printmaking and weaving. It’s a busy and creative time in the art studio, and we are so proud of the focus and growth our students are showing!
Class Placement: Parent/Guardian Input (optional) due Friday, May 8
This spring, Island Creek Staff will begin creating tentative class groupings for the upcoming school year. Classroom assignments will be finalized in mid-August.
When making these placements, we carefully consider many factors, including:
- Individual student information
- Teacher input
- Social relationships
- A blend of children with diverse needs, personalities, and learning interests in every class.
Due to the numerous factors involved in creating balanced classroom placements, including teacher staffing, we are unable to honor requests for specific teachers.
If you have information you believe is important for us to consider regarding your child’s placement for next year, please complete this form by Friday, May 8 at 4:00 PM.
If you do not have any specific information you would like us to consider, there is no need to complete the form.

Standards of Learning (SOL) Testing at Island Creek (Grades 3-6)
Please avoid scheduling appointments on test days. Ensure your child eats a healthy breakfast and arrives at school on time to help them do their best.
-
3rd Grade: May 5 and May 14
-
4th Grade: May 5 and May 14
-
5th Grade: May 7, May 12, and May 19
-
6th Grade: May 7 and May 19
Here are some ways to prepare before a test:
- Remind your child to get a good night's rest.
- Make sure your child has a healthy breakfast.
- Avoid scheduling appointments that would take your child out of school on a testing day.
- Remind your child that electronic devices are not allowed in testing, unless required by 504 or IEP.
Support Your Children During Important Spring Assessments
Students will be participating in spring assessments based on their grade level and courses. This includes summative assessments like Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what a student knows, and progress assessments like Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, which measure where they are in their learning.
FCPS encourages all families to support their students in taking these tests. Virginia requires schools to test at least 95% of students on SOLs, so when families choose not to participate in testing, it can impact a school’s accreditation, accountability ratings, and ability to measure student progress accurately.
Parents and caregivers can help their children perform their best on these tests by reminding them to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and the cell phone policy still applies during testing season.
It is important that students attend school on scheduled testing dates. If you are aware of a conflict that may cause your student to miss a test, please notify your student’s school as soon as possible.
Learn more about how to support your child and why test participation matters.
