April 17, 2026

Greetings Fairfax Families,

It has been a great week in the den.

Future Planning & Career Readiness were the focus of many initiatives this week.

  • Inaugural On-Site Job Fair: Students gained hands-on experience by networking with employers and sharpening their interview techniques.
  • AVID Interviews: Potential "AVIDizers" shared their inspiring stories and committed to their academic growth for the upcoming school year.
  • AP Research: Students showcased their expertise, delivering high-level presentations on their year-long research topics.

Welcoming New Faces

  • Rising Lions: We hosted 575 students from KJMS, introducing them to the pride of the lions through school tours, student-led panels, and an exploration of our diverse clubs and activities.
  • Family Engagement: Our liaisons celebrated our parent partners, recognizing the vital role they play in our school community.

Innovation & School Spirit

  • Food Truck Wars: The Food and Consumer Science program delivered a delicious fusion of culinary skill and marketing. Highlights included Korean BBQ, Latin-infused dishes, and hot chicken.
  • Purple Up! Day: The halls were a sea of purple as we celebrated the Month of the Military Child, honoring the resilience of our military-connected students.

FHS Car Show

Don't miss out on the action! Come support the Auto Tech program this weekend at the FHS Car Show. It’s a great way to see our students' technical skills in person and enjoy some community fun.

Good luck to our AP Seminar students as they prepare for their presentations next week! The bar has been set high, and we know you’ll do great.

Have a fabulous FAIRFAX weekend.

Senior wins Peace Award

A person holding a bouquet of flowers

Students from 28 Fairfax County public schools have been named recipients of the 2026 Student Peace Awards of Fairfax County, designed to recognize young people who work as peacemakers.

Fairfax Senior Damanika Ravi has been working to address biased speech in her school and beyond, motivated by witnessing a troubling rise in the casual use of racial slurs and stereotypes among students. She joined GMU’s Youth Research Council, whose mission is to promote community capacity building and racial equity through ongoing research activities. She has participated in data collection, analysis and presentation and transformed student testimonials into art—poems, word clouds, and a “quilt” of impactful phrases. Damanika joined her school’s Equity Team in her junior year, working to promote social awareness and positive change. The experience has made her more aware of her own words and actions and has deepened her commitment to equity and justice.

Congratulations, Damanika!

SOL Support

Support Your Children During Important Spring Assessments

Students will be participating in spring assessments based on their grade level and courses. This includes summative assessments like Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which measure what a student knows, and progress assessments like Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, which measure where they are in their learning.

FCPS encourages all families to support their students in taking these tests. Virginia requires schools to test at least 95% of students on SOLs, so when families choose not to participate in testing, it can impact a school’s accreditation, accountability ratings, and ability to measure student progress accurately.

Parents and caregivers can help their children perform their best on these tests by reminding them to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and the cell phone policy still applies during testing season.

It is important that students attend school on scheduled testing dates. If you are aware of a conflict that may cause your student to miss a test, please notify your student’s school as soon as possible.
