Principals' Letter

Gunston Families,

The end of January and beginning of February have brought unexpected weather, including a full week of school closure and several delays. While these disruptions can be challenging, we could not be prouder of how our Gunston Eagles returned to school ready to reset, reconnect with routines, and get back to learning. Our students showed flexibility, perseverance, and focus, and those are skills that will serve them well both in and out of the classroom.

Due to the weather-related disruptions this year, we will need to adjust some February and March event dates.  We are finalizing new dates and will send them out soon.   These changes allow us to ensure strong instruction, adequate preparation, and the best possible experience for students and families. We sincerely appreciate your patience and flexibility as we make these necessary adjustments. Updated dates will be shared as soon as they are finalized.

In classrooms, students are strengthening important learning habits such as organization, note-taking, and active study strategies. These skills help students better understand and synthesize their learning. As progress reports are shared this month, we encourage families to engage students in conversations about their progress. Setting goals and identifying strategies to reach those goals has been successful for many of our Eagles. We encourage families to continue using these skills at home, even for goals and activities not related to school.  Our second quarter Ernie Eagle Awards will be on March 4th, K-3 in the morning and 4-6 in the afternoon.  We will send specific times with your notification from the teacher if your student earned an award this quarter.

As the snow melts and temperatures improve, students will return to outdoor recess when conditions allow. Please be sure students come to school dressed appropriately for the weather so they can safely enjoy time outside.

February is also Kindness Month, which provides a meaningful opportunity to talk with children about showing kindness, accepting others, and helping everyone feel included. We are proud of the caring and respectful community our Eagles continue to build together.

Thank you for your continued partnership, flexibility, and support.

Warm regards,

Ms. Rucinski and Ms. Nelson

It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Kindergarten helps children learn and practice the social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives.

Fairfax County public schools typically conduct kindergarten registration events, including orientation, in the spring. Eligible children can be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps schools prepare and ensure they have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

If your child will attend our school, please gather necessary documents and complete registration forms as soon as possible. Kindergarten Orientation will be held on Monday, March 23rd from 4:30PM - 6:30pm.  More details forthcoming!

FCPS offers support and resources for all families to help with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For support in other languages, please visit the FCPS Registration webpage
