Dear FHS Families and Community,
It has been a joy to welcome our students back to the halls of FHS this week. As we closed out Quarter 2 and the first semester, the energy on campus was palpable. This week was truly about reconnection—seeing our students dive back into their learning, return to the courts and fields for games, and cross the finish line on their culminating semester tasks was paramount.
Excellence in Communication
I am thrilled to share that FHS was recently recognized for our weekly newsletter! We take great pride in using this platform as a vital link between school and home, and we are honored to be noted for our commitment to clear, consistent communication.
Celebrating Culture and Community
February is off to a fantastic start as we kick off Black History Month. Our hallways are adorned with celebratory decor, and students are engaging daily through trivia contests and morning announcements that honor the rich history and contributions of African-American history.
We also took time this week to celebrate our PAWSome School Counseling Team for Counselor Appreciation Week. Their tireless advisement and steady guidance are key to our students' success, and we are so grateful for the heart they bring to their work every day.
On Stage & On the Walls
I had the absolute pleasure of attending the Fairfax Academy production of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. This "Golden Age" hit is a pure delight—it is a toe-tapping, face-smiling experience from start to finish. If you haven’t seen it yet, you’re in luck: shows continue this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday!
Honoring Our Trailblazers
Finally, tonight marks a special milestone for our school as we induct new members into the FHS Hall of Fame. We are excited to recognize these trailblazers whose legacies continue to inspire our current students to reach for their own greatness.
Sharing the LOVE at FHS
As we head into next week, FHS will be all about the LOVE! We have a fantastic lineup of events to keep the positive momentum going:
-
Spirited Dress-Up Days: Show your school heart by participating in our Valentine-themed spirit days all week long.
-
Treats for Your "Buddies": Several of our student clubs will be sponsoring treat sales. It’s the perfect opportunity to grab a sweet surprise for your favorite friends and support our campus organizations.
-
Lunchtime Beats: Our resident DJ will be in the house during lunch periods, playing all your favorite love songs and upbeat hits to keep the vibes high.
Thank you for your continued partnership and for making the start of this new semester a PAWSitive experience.
In partnership,

Feb. 2 - 6 is National School Counseling Week

Behind every successful student is often a dedicated counselor providing the tools, encouragement, and listening ear they need to thrive. This week, we are taking a moment to recognize our incredible School Counseling Team.
Our counselors wear many hats - academic advisors, career guides, and emotional anchors. Whether they are helping a students navigate courses, activities, post-secondary decisions, or simply providing a safe space for a student to breathe, their impact is felt in every corner of our hallways. They don’t just help our students reach their goals; they help them find their voice. Thank you, Counselors! 👏🎉✨🦁💖
Congratulations, Mr. Walker!

We wanted to share the news that our assistant principal, Mr. Dana Walker, will be transitioning to a new position as the assistant principal at "THE NEW" Western High School.
We want to take a moment to thank Mr. Walker for his service to the Fairfax High School community over the last four years. He has supported numerous students and families, the Math and Social Studies departments, vertical articulation efforts within our pyramid, the development of the Freshman Academy, and also led the development and creation of our school Honor Code. His big personality and heartfelt energy are always appreciated. He has remained committed to equity and access for all as he staunchly supported our school goals and improvements. Administrators are tasked with a variety of things to do day-to-day and Mr. Walker has always handled tasks with grace and intentionality. He will be missed. He will make his transition to his new position on April 1 and we wish him much success!
Always remember, once a LION, always a LION. 🦁
🏆Fairfax HS wins Best Newsletter Award!
We are pleased to announce that at the recent FCPS Communicators Conference, Fairfax High School won the Best Newsletter Award!
From the Office of Communications:
Fairfax High School’s newsletter strives to be a “one-stop show” of excitement that spotlights the uniqueness of Fairfax High School.
The weekly principal message is written to be a story highlighting the good that has occurred and building anticipation of what is next. The handy “need to know” and “nice to know” headings help busy families not miss key updates and information. The school is strategic in equitable representation — they have staff spotlights, individual spotlights, program, and partnership spotlights to show that it takes many key investors to support a school.
We are honored to receive this recognition. Thank you for your support!

⚠️ Weather Closings
 ❄️ Prepare for Winter Weather
Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather closing decisions are made at FCPS.
FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible, including email, text, social media, the new FCPS mobile app, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated.
Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange emergency child care if needed.
⛄ Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities
We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. View the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.
If you need assistance getting cold-weather clothing for your family, please call Fairfax County Coordinated Services Planning (CSP) at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health.
Meal Kits for Fasting Students
From February 18 to March 19, students who are fasting during the day can take school meals home. These kits include one breakfast and one lunch to be eaten after the school day ends.
Families must fill out a request form each week for every student who wants a kit. The first deadline is Wednesday, February 11, for the week of February 16. Please note other important details below:
-
Cost: Meals are charged just like a normal school day.
-
Pickup: Students must grab their kits at the end of the school day.
-
Menu: Kits include school meals that are easy to heat at home.
Visit the Food and Nutrition webpage for forms, deadlines, and other information. Please contact the Office of Food and Nutrition Services with any questions at FCPSFNS@fcps.edu or 703-813-4800.
Our school will participate in the FCPS Student Experience Survey. This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.
All students in grades 6-12, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email on February 23. We will administer the survey during the school day between Monday, February 23, and Friday, March 6. Any student may take the survey at home, if they are unable to take the survey during the school day. You will receive a communication with details on how to preview the survey and opt your child out, if you choose. The electronic opt-out form can also be accessed at this link.
We believe it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which includes a focus on amplifying student voice and experiences as we work toward meeting plan goals.
📵 Cell Phone Policy Reminder
Help Keep Fairfax Phone-Free!
Please remind your student that cell phones and personal devices (AirPods, earbuds, headsets, other items connected to the internet) can no longer be used during passing periods. Phones and personal devices must be off and away for the entire school day (bell to bell) with the exception of lunch time in designated lunch spaces. Cell phones are also not permitted to be used as an instructional tool.
FCPS’ cell phone policy helps students stay focused, safe, and engaged at school. Visit FCPS’ cell phone policy webpage for more information and answers to frequently asked questions, including consequences for cell phone policy violations and exceptions for students with medical conditions or IEP/504 plans.
If you need to contact your student during the school day, please call our front office at 703-219-2200, or our sub schools:
- 9th and 11th grades, Ms. Sanchez, 703-219-4988
- 10th and 12th grades, Ms. Waters, 703-219-2395
Thank you for your support and cooperation!

Please note that the Fairfax Academy Open House has been moved to February 10, 6:30-7:30pm. Families should enter the building at Door 1, and meet staff in the "commons," the main hallway alongside the auditorium.

Be a Student Rep to the FCPS School Board
Each year, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) students have the opportunity to apply for the position of Student Representative to the School Board. The student representative is not a member of the School Board but serves in a non-voting, advisory capacity, representing the interests of students in Fairfax County Public Schools.
Students who are currently in grades 9, 10, and 11 are eligible to apply and do not need to be current members of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SAC). The student representative shall be a resident of Fairfax County or Fairfax City and a student in FCPS.
The application involves two components. Both are required to be considered for the election.
Written Applications are due Monday, February 23, 2026. 2026

Student Services Updates
♦ 2026-2027 Course Selection Process
The Academic Advising process for the 2026-2027 school year is underway. Please take some time to review the information below.
You are encouraged to sit down with your student and review their graduation requirements and options for the following academic year. The FCPS site has general information but our Fairfax High School 2026-2027 Course Selection Process page will provide more specific information.
Students and families can view the following information:
- Important dates and deadlines
- Course Catalog
- Course Selection Video and Academic Advising Slides
- General Course Content (NEW ADDITION)
- Course Selection Sheets
- Information on FCPS Summer School, Dual Enrollment, and Academy Programs
FHS counselors will meet with students on the following dates for Academic Advising through English classes:
-
Rising 12 Grade Students (Class of 2027) - Jan. 23 to Feb. 12 (Dates have shifted due to snow)
-
Rising 11th Grade Students (Class of 2027) - Feb. 9 to Feb. 26
-
Rising 10th Grade Students (Class of 2028) - Feb. 27 to Mar. 6
Any questions, please feel free to reach out to your child’s counselor.
♦ Senior Transcripts
Mid-year transcript will automatically be sent to the colleges where initial transcripts were sent. Many colleges have set February 1 deadlines to receive mid-year transcripts, and students may receive emails and/or see missing mid-year transcript listed in their application portals. However, as the 10th or 11th largest school district in the country (varies year to year), colleges are aware that historically FCPS does not have 1st semester official transcripts to send by Feb 1. Depending on the school calendar each year, FCPS transcripts will not be available to send until mid-February. You will not have access to SIS to upload an unofficial copy of your 1st semester grades by Feb. 1. This is not in your control and will not impact your application review. Colleges will accept and review our official transcripts when they are sent. Please let your school counselor know if you have any questions.
♦ Senior Career Experience
This year, FHS is starting an opportunity for seniors to explore and share their career and personal interests. The FHS PRIDE PREP Program is an experience for seniors to complete an internship or career shadow during May 11 to May 28. To be eligible for the program, seniors must apply and earn approval. Applications are due February 27, 2026, by 3:30pm. No late applications will be accepted. Upon approval, students must complete a contract that requires a parent signature. Students will document their experience and commit to sharing a reflection in a Presentation of Learning on May 28, 2026, prior to graduation. Applications were sent to students via email on January 28 to their FCPS email.
