Message from the Principal

Dear Powell Families,

This week, our school community had the honor of welcoming many Veterans and active-duty service members for our Veterans Day event. Thank you to all of the family members, friends, and community guests who joined us and allowed us to recognize your service and sacrifice. It was a powerful reminder for our students of the importance of courage, commitment, and service to others.

I would also like to extend a very special thank you to the staff who helped organize, plan, and support the event—everything from the student performances to the displays and logistics made the morning feel truly meaningful and memorable for everyone who attended. We are so grateful for your hard work and heart.

Looking ahead, we are excited to welcome families for our upcoming Thanksgiving Luncheon! If you are planning to join us, please make sure you have:

  • Submitted your payment, and
  • Returned the RSVP form  to school

This helps us ensure we have enough food and seating for all of our guests. If you have any questions about your payment or form, please contact the main office, and we’ll be happy to help.

We look forward to sharing this special meal and time of gratitude together as a Powell community! 💛🧡🦃

Warmly, Catherine Han Principal, Colin Powell Elementary School

Thanksgiving Luncheon – Thursday, November 20th

We’re excited to celebrate our Thanksgiving Luncheon next Thursday and look forward to seeing all families who RSVP’d!

Below is your child’s lunch schedule. Please arrive a few minutes early to meet your child in the cafeteria. Staff will guide you to their table.

If you RSVP’d, you will receive your ticket next week—please bring it, as it indicates whether you purchased a lunch or are attending as a guest.

Note: If you did not RSVP, the window has closed to ensure proper spacing and enough food for all attendees.

Questions? Email Sanaz Hosseini at shosseini2@fcps.edu or contact the Main Office at 571-522-6000.

We are also welcoming parent volunteers—if interested, email Ms. Hosseini by Wednesday, November 20th.

We can’t wait to celebrate with you!

Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

All families need to complete a Federal Impact Aid Survey as soon as possible. The form is available in ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in). Only the enrolling parent can complete the form online.

We have sent home paper copies to all families who have not completed the form in ParentVUE.

As of today, 286 CPES families have completed the online survey. Thank you to all families who have responded.

We recommend using Google Chrome on your computer or mobile device.

Step 1:  Go to sisparent.fcps.edu or type it into your Chrome browser. Click Here

Step 2: Log into your ParentVUE account. If you don’t have one, please contact the school.

Step 3: Click the “Online Packets” link at the top of the page, then select “Federal Impact Aid Survey” at the bottom. This will take you to the Impact Aid Survey for you to complete.

✅ If you have multiple children in FCPS, complete a form for each child. You’ll know you’re done when you see a green check next to each child’s name.

📝 Paper Forms - A paper copy of the form will be sent home with your student starting November 12. If you do not wish to complete online.

Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. The funds support all Fairfax County public schools and centers. Visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page to learn more.

Staff Appreciation Help

To show our appreciation for our dedicated staff, we're organizing some morale-boosting activities. This year, we're adding a special twist: gift card prizes! To make this a reality, we kindly request donations of gift cards valued up to $10. Your generosity will help us recognize and reward our hardworking staff. Please send all gift cards in an envelope clearly marked “Social Committee” so your child’s teacher will know where to submit your donation. Thank you in advanced for your support of our teachers. If you could please send these in by December 5, that would be very helpful!

Youseum

Thank you to Ms. Keshava and her son Aaradh for last week’s YOUseum display!  Their display included artifacts, photos, books, and outfits that centered around Diwali, Sankranti, and Dussehra, festivals that are celebrated in their culture.  The idea of Diwali is light over darkness, and many families decorate with lights and celebrate with each other.  Fun fact: Rangolis (example propped up in corner of picture) are designs that are drawn on the ground using powdered flour!

Lightspeed Parent Portal Allows Parents to Manage Student Screen Time

FCPS has introduced new parent controls in the Lightspeed Parent Portal to help families manage screen time on FCPS-issued devices. Through the portal, parents can control their child's access to YouTube and pause web browsing during designated After-School Hours while students are off the FCPS network.

These controls are active Monday - Friday from 3:30 PM to 6:00 AM (even on student holidays) and all day Saturday and Sunday. They do not affect district filtering policies during the instructional day.

Parents can register for the Lightspeed Parent Portal using the link provided in their weekly Lightspeed Online Student Activity Report email.

For more information about the Parent Portal, please visit the Lightspeed Parent Portal page on the FCPS website.
