From the Principal’s Pen
Dear Laurel Hill Families,
Thank you for your support of our Cosmic Bowling event! See some photos from the event below. We appreciate our PE department and PTA collaborating on this fun night!
As you know, we have some amazing teachers, and Mr. Cookson is one of them! He has created our Sparklemuffins Podcast filled with amazing science and geography content for all grade levels (each episode also sneaks in 5th grade content for the SOL, so tune in)! Sparklemuffins is a science podcast where kids and families pick a topic. They talk about the science topic as they eat muffins.
We want to remind you about the Geography Bee (which is part of the podcast). The link is here. We now have over 100 episodes recorded and the podcast is booked until early January. A student is coming every morning from now until winter break to talk science. We have close to 500 subscribers, and Mr. Cookson's goal is 1,000. We can do it with your help!!
Lastly, we hope to see as many of you as possible for next week's virtual PTA meeting. Please see the link in our Save the Date section.
Sincerely,
Janice Dalton, Principal
Thmeaka Traylor, Assistant Principal
Addison Smith, Assistant Principal

Impact Aid
The Federal Impact Aid Survey is now available to complete online.
Attention FCPS Families! Every family should complete the survey.
The Federal Impact Aid program provides money to districts that enroll federally connected students. Help FCPS secure funding from the Impact Aid Program by helping us identify:
- Military families.
- Federally connected families.
- Families living on a military base.
Please complete one form for each child in your household. Remember that only the parent that registered the student with FCPS (the ‘enrolling parent’) can fill out the Impact Aid Survey form.
Your information will be kept strictly confidential.
For families without access to ParentVUE, a paper copy of the form will be sent home with your student starting November 12.
Your support will ensure that we receive the resources for which we are eligible.
To access the Impact Aid Form from your computer or mobile device, we recommend using Google Chrome.
Step 1: CLICK HERE or type sisparent.fcps.edu into your Chrome address bar to be taken to SIS ParentVUE. If you don’t have a SIS ParentVUE account, contact your child’s school for an activation letter.
Step 2: After you’ve logged into your ParentVue Account, look for the ‘Online Packets’ link at the top of the page. Click ‘Online Packets’.
Step 3: Next, click the ‘Federal Impact Aid Survey’ button on the bottom of the page. This will take you to the Impact Aid Survey for you to complete.
If you have multiple children in Fairfax County Public Schools, please fill out a form for each child. You will know you have completed all of the forms when you get to the final page and see a green check next to each of their names.
If you have any questions regarding the survey, please email Sarah Orlick at scorlick@fcps.edu.

Benchmark Curriculum Updates
📚 Finishing Up Our Learning About Life Science in Language Arts 📚
Benchmark Unit 1 in Language Arts is coming to a close! Over the last several weeks, our students have learned, read, and written about the natural world around us.
Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:
- Question: How do living things change? How have you changed since last year? How do you think you’ll change in the next five years?
- Activity: Go outside and try to spot three different plants or animals. Discuss how they get food, water, and shelter.
At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.
Volunteering Requirements
We are sharing an important update to the volunteer process. Effective now, we are implementing an immediate, temporary operational change to the Level 3 volunteer background check process.
What this means for you:
-
Pause on Fingerprinting: Effective immediately, we are pausing the requirement for most Level 3 volunteer fingerprinting and FBI Rap Back enrollment. If you are scheduled for an upcoming fingerprinting appointment, please cancel your appointment unless you are a mentor, host parent, or non-parent volunteer having frequent, direct, and unsupervised contact with students, which will still require fingerprinting. FCPS is charged if individuals miss a fingerprinting appointment without canceling in advance.
-
If you have already been fingerprinted: If you have already been fingerprinted and are waiting for your Level 3 clearance, your application and fingerprint results will be processed. You may volunteer while your application is being processed. Once your application has been processed, you will receive communication directly through Volunteer FCPS regarding your status and eligibility.
-
New Attestation Requirement: To ensure continuous safety, all new volunteers will be required to sign a Volunteer Certification Statement. This statement is a legal attestation confirming you have no history of violent felonies, physical/sexual crimes against children, or crimes of moral turpitude. Volunteers who have already submitted an application also provided a statement regarding their criminal history in their application, and do not have any additional steps regarding this attestation.
Visit the Volunteer FCPS Frequently Asked Questions page to learn more.
