Fairfax County SNAP Update

Governor Glenn Youngkin declared a State of Emergency to address the lapse in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.

To fill this gap the State has created an emergency food assistance program called Virginia Emergency Nutrition Assistance (VENA). VENA will provide emergency food assistance to eligible SNAP households while the federal shutdown continues in November. View our SNAP Updates flyers, available in English and Spanish.

  • The Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) is implementing VENA directly, without local Fairfax County involvement. Emergency food assistance under VENA will be added to existing SNAP EBT cards starting Nov. 3.
  • VENA benefits will be paid on a weekly basis, instead of monthly, for the month of November with the hope the federal government reopens during this time.
  • VENA is a state funded and state administered program. If there are questions, participants can call the number on the back of their card or VDSS Constituent Services at 804-726-7000.
  • VDSS has directed that people not approved for SNAP before October 29 will not be able to participate in VENA; however, SNAP applications and renewals will continue to be accepted and processed. While SNAP applications can be received during the shutdown, SNAP benefits cannot be issued until the federal government reopens.

For more information and to see the VENA Schedule for Food Assistance, please go here.

Supporting Your Child's Mental Health

Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:

  • Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
  • Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
  • Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
  • Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
  • A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
  • Alcohol or drug use.
  • Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family.
  • Thoughts of harming themselves or others.

If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Please contact your child's school counselor to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Find additional ways to support your child’s wellness

If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis such as thoughts of harming themselves or others, please take action right away. Call 988, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health Emergency Services at 703-573-5679.
