 November 7, 2025
From the Principal’s Pen
Dear Laurel Hill Families,
The first quarter was full of beginning of the year assessments, establishing routines and procedures, and getting to know students and families better. Teachers have also met with many of you to share student progress and identify areas of strength as well as areas of growth. Please be aware that the first quarter progress reports will be on SIS ParentVue on Monday, November 10, and a hard copy will go home on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.
We are also very well aware of the impact of the government shutdown on our community. Fairfax county is home to around 80,000 federal employees and thousands of federal contractors. You may find community resources available to families here. If your income changes — for example, due to a furlough, layoff, or job loss — you may become newly eligible. Once approved, your benefits stay active for the rest of the school year and for the first 30 days of the next school year. We encourage any of our families to apply for free and reduced-price meals at any time during the school year.
As we enter into our second quarter, we look forward to seeing more growth, engagement, and fun!
Sincerely,
Janice Dalton, Principal
Thmeaka Traylor, Assistant Principal
Addison Smith, Assistant Principal

Students in Kindergarten through grade three receive instruction in an emotional and social health unit. Students in grades 4-6 receive instruction in a human growth and development unit and an emotional and social health unit.
Parents and guardians are invited to attend an evening opportunity to preview the Family Life Education media and lessons and to talk with school staff about the program. Impact Aid
The Federal Impact Aid Survey is now available to complete online.
Attention FCPS Families! Every family should complete the survey.
The Federal Impact Aid program provides money to districts that enroll federally connected students. Help FCPS secure funding from the Impact Aid Program by helping us identify:
- Military families.
- Federally connected families.
- Families living on a military base.
Please complete one form for each child in your household. Remember that only the parent that registered the student with FCPS (the ‘enrolling parent’) can fill out the Impact Aid Survey form.
Your information will be kept strictly confidential.
For families without access to ParentVUE, a paper copy of the form will be sent home with your student starting November 12.
Your support will ensure that we receive the resources for which we are eligible.
To access the Impact Aid Form from your computer or mobile device, we recommend using Google Chrome.
Step 1: CLICK HERE or type sisparent.fcps.edu into your Chrome address bar to be taken to SIS ParentVUE. If you don’t have a SIS ParentVUE account, contact your child’s school for an activation letter.
Step 2: After you’ve logged into your ParentVue Account, look for the ‘Online Packets’ link at the top of the page. Click ‘Online Packets’.
Step 3: Next, click the ‘Federal Impact Aid Survey’ button on the bottom of the page. This will take you to the Impact Aid Survey for you to complete.
If you have multiple children in Fairfax County Public Schools, please fill out a form for each child. You will know you have completed all of the forms when you get to the final page and see a green check next to each of their names.
If you have any questions regarding the survey, please email Sarah Orlick at scorlick@fcps.edu.

Benchmark Curriculum Updates
📚 Finishing Up Our Learning About Life Science in Language Arts 📚
Benchmark Unit 1 in Language Arts is coming to a close! Over the last several weeks, our students have learned, read, and written about the natural world around us.
Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:
- Question: How do living things change? How have you changed since last year? How do you think you’ll change in the next five years?
- Activity: Go outside and try to spot three different plants or animals. Discuss how they get food, water, and shelter.
At the end of the unit, your child will take their unit magazine home. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.
Volunteering Requirements
We are sharing an important update to the volunteer process. Effective now, we are implementing an immediate, temporary operational change to the Level 3 volunteer background check process.
What this means for you:
-
Pause on Fingerprinting: Effective immediately, we are pausing the requirement for most Level 3 volunteer fingerprinting and FBI Rap Back enrollment. If you are scheduled for an upcoming fingerprinting appointment, please cancel your appointment unless you are a mentor, host parent, or non-parent volunteer having frequent, direct, and unsupervised contact with students, which will still require fingerprinting. FCPS is charged if individuals miss a fingerprinting appointment without canceling in advance.
-
If you have already been fingerprinted: If you have already been fingerprinted and are waiting for your Level 3 clearance, your application and fingerprint results will be processed. You may volunteer while your application is being processed. Once your application has been processed, you will receive communication directly through Volunteer FCPS regarding your status and eligibility.
-
New Attestation Requirement: To ensure continuous safety, all new volunteers will be required to sign a Volunteer Certification Statement. This statement is a legal attestation confirming you have no history of violent felonies, physical/sexual crimes against children, or crimes of moral turpitude. Volunteers who have already submitted an application also provided a statement regarding their criminal history in their application, and do not have any additional steps regarding this attestation.
Visit the Volunteer FCPS Frequently Asked Questions page to learn more.
