Flint Hill Updates

Good Afternoon Flint Hill Families,

Thank you to all the families who were able to join us for Back-to-School Night yesterday evening! It was wonderful to see all of our classrooms filled with parents and guardians connecting with their students' teachers. In my classroom visits, I especially enjoyed joining in thinking routines with Ms. Attiliis and Mrs. Strumsky! We look forward to welcoming you back to school many other times this year for events, celebrations and other opportunities.

A big thank you is due to the PTA for the snacks that were provided for teachers today. The appreciation you shared was a thoughtful event for all of the FHES team.

I am also excited to share that FHES was selected to participate in Rocket Day 2025! FHES will receive Rocket Day kits from Arm & Hammer to construct with their classes as part of World Space Week (October 4-10). This hands-on STEAM activity will encourage our students to explore science and creativity. Launch day for the rockets will be on October 9th!

Don't forget that the first PTA meeting of the year will be on Thursday, September 25th at 6:00 pm! The meeting will be held in the FHES library and will include updates from the FHES kindergarten team and school counselors.

Kindly,

Mr. Montaquila, Principal

Mr. Baker, Assistant Principal

AAP Parent Information Meeting - 10/9/25 – 2:30 PM

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development efforts and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of advanced learners. FCPS offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in Grades K-12. The continuum of services approach recognizes unique student needs and focuses on matching services, not labeling students.

Through the continuum, students have:

  • Multiple entry points for deeper learning opportunities in specific areas of need as they develop.
  • A cluster group of students with similar academic needs to continue growing in their learning.

Teachers, Advanced Academic Resource Teachers (AARTs), and school administrators work together to provide services at the elementary level.

Please read the AAP Newsletter on our school website to learn more about advanced academic services in FCPS.

If you have additional questions about these services, please contact Stephanie Altounian, Advanced Academic Resource Teacher.

  • The AAP Parent Information Meeting will be held on 10/9/25 at 2:30 PM.
  • Fall screening is available for students who are new to FCPS since January. The fall screening referral window is from the first day of school - October 15, 2025.
  • Spring screening is available for any Grade 2-7 FCPS-enrolled student. The spring screening referral window is from the first day of school - December 15, 2025.

Popsicles on the Playground for Military Connected Families

Popsicles

Flint Hill Elementary is a proud Purple Star Designated School.  As a part of this designation, we host different events to celebrate our Military Connected families.  More information about FHES being a Purple Star School can be found HERE

Our first event will take place on Tuesday, September 30th.  We will be meeting on the FHES playground at 4:00.  Popsicles will be provided.

We hope that all our military connected families can join us!  If your family plans to attend, please RSVP directly to Mrs. Williams at aywilliams1@fcps.edu. We are looking forward to a great event

NexTrex Challenge

Flint Hill is participating in the NexTrex Challenge!

FHES is collecting plastic items to be weighed and recycled. If our school gathers 1000 lbs of plastic before the end of the school year, FHES will receive a donated bench for our school courtyard.

Plastic items that can be included in the challenge are detailed in the image below. Plastic collection bins are located in the main lobby.

NexTrex

Each week, donations are bagged and weighed as part of the program. The weighed bags must then be dropped-off at participating donation sites.

Students and families who help deliver the collected plastic will be recognized on our Green Ribbon Wall! If you are visiting, FHES and are willing to take a donation, please stop by the main office for more details.

Have you registered to volunteer at Flint Hill?

Flint Hill Families! Your energy and enthusiasm power our school community, and we excited to welcome you into our classrooms, field trips, and more!

SAFETY FIRST: BACKGROUND CHECKS REQUIRED!

To ensure the safety of our students, recurring volunteers and chaperones will need a completed background check and fingerprinting on file with FCPS before joining the fun! This includes:

  • Classroom helpers
  • Field trip chaperones
  • And more!

*One-time large event volunteers are not required to complete the extended clearance process but are still expected to scan their identification at the FHES Visitor Management System to be cleared against the Sex Offender Registry.

*If you may volunteer several times a year, please consider completing the FCPS background check process.

Ready to get cleared? Visit the FCPS Volunteer Page or connect with Ms. Aranibar in our main office. Please be patient as our county processes requests from 140+ schools!

Madison HS Football Game Supervision for Elementary Students

All elementary and middle school students need to be accompanied & supervised by a parent/guardian while at the game. High school students who get dropped off must plan to have their rides waiting for them by 9:30 PM.

We are expecting a very large crowd so please plan on coming early.

Please take the time to discuss the information below with your child(ren):

  • No backpacks, bags or sports equipment will be allowed in the stadium.  (Students and Adults)
  • No outside food or drinks are allowed. The concession stand will be open.
  • The purpose for attending our varsity football games is to watch the game and cheer for all those participating (cheerleaders, band, dance team, etc).
  • We cheer FOR our team and not against our opponent. All cheers should be positive.
  • The gates to the stadium will open at 6:00 pm.
  • All spectators are expected to be in the stands and exit the stadium immediately after the game.
  • Elementary & middle school students must always be supervised by their parent/guardian.
  • If you leave the game, you will not be able to re-enter the stadium.
  • Whistles, air horns and similar noisemakers are prohibited.
  • Anyone caught trying to enter the game without paying will be removed and can be banned from attending future games.

Our goal is to create a safe and positive community event.  Any behaviors that take away from this goal may result in being removed from the game and not being allowed to attend future games.

SEL Screener Parent Notification and Updates

hands hold a paper happy face. worried and angry faces lay nearby

The Fall Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3 through 12 in October.

Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. This gives students a way to share how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families without a ParentVUE account. For more information including SEL Screener questions and opt-out information, please visit FCPS’ Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

New Math Screening and Growth Assessment for Elementary Students

Starting in September, FCPS elementary schools will use the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Math assessment to assess grade level mathematics skills in grades 1-6. The MAP Math test along with the iReady Reading test fulfill a state requirement to measure academic growth in grades 3-6 throughout the school year.

MAP Math tests are administered in the fall, winter, and spring. They help teachers identify students' strengths and areas where they may need more support.

Families can learn more about MAP Growth assessments by visiting the MAP Test Information webpage.

FHES Family Handbook

FHES Logo

Good communication between home and school is vital to a successful school experience for each child. Questions relating to your child should be directed to the classroom teacher. All teachers have voice mail and an e-mail address. The school has a web page that links directly to each teacher’s e-mail.

Each year, FCPS produces a Handbook for its FCPS families. It contains valuable information you may need throughout the year, including calendars, services, and special programs, the instructional program, and information about starting school. Flint Hill Elementary has produced a handbook that includes some additional notes that are important for our school community.
