September is Attendance Awareness Month. It is the perfect time to raise awareness about the importance of attendance and its connection to academic success.
Regular attendance is crucial for the academic success of all students. Studies have repeatedly proven that students with better attendance records perform better in school and are more likely to graduate high school on time.
Did you know?
- Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
- Missing 10% (or about 2 days per month) can make it harder to learn to read.
- Attending school even if your student arrives late is valuable for their academic success.
How You Can Help:
- Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
- Don’t let your child stay home unless she is truly sick. Keep in mind that complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.
- If your child does need to stay home, make sure you are calling the school to report the absence
-
ParentVUE - You can report the absence
- Justice Attendance Line - English - 703-824-3920
- Justice Attendance Line - Spanish - 703-824-8970
- If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make them feel comfortable and excited about learning.
- Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
- Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.
- If you're feeling frustrated with trying to get your child to school, contact your child's Dean of Students to set up an Attendance Meeting
\n order to support students in settling into a consistent class schedule, please see the timeline for schedule changes for the 2025-2026 school year.
-
September 22, 2025 - February 6, 2026:
- No Elective Change Requests
- All Academic Level Change Requests (Example: English 9 Honors to English 9) must complete the Academic Improvement Plan that involves a parent/teacher/student conference. The Academic Improvement Plan form will be located in Student Services
- After the Academic Improvement Plan is completed and the student still wishes to move forward with the academic level change, the schedule request will be reviewed by a committee. Approval is not guaranteed and is based on seat availability in the requested course
-
November 5, 2025: Last day to drop a course without it going on the student’s transcript as a Withdrawal Pass (WP) or a Withdrawal Fail (WF). Please see FCPS Regulation 2445.7 – Policy for Dropping A Class

FCPS Students in grades 7-12 are offered the opportunity to take the World Languages Credit By Exam (WLCBE). The WLCBE assesses language proficiency in languages other than English and recognizes the strengths that our students bring as effective communicators in multiple languages.
This assessment may be used to award world language credits towards graduation, determine course placement for language courses offered in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), and fulfill the world languages requirements for the Virginia Seal of Biliteracy.
The exam is offered in the fall and the spring each school year. A student may participate in the exam a total of a total of two times per language, with no more than one attempt each year. In other words, students have two chances per language to earn credits by taking the exam between grades 7 and 12. The spring exam is only available for eligible students who enroll in FCPS after the fall registration deadline.
Students who wish to take the exam should be able to proficiently understand and communicate in the testing language, and will be asked to listen, read, speak, and either write/type or, for American Sign Language, sign/interpret. For more information on how to prepare for the exam and scoring criteria you may visit the FCPS World Languages Credit By Exam webpage.
Please visit our website to see the list of available languages.
