Seniors, Let's GO! 💯 🦁

August 28, 2025
A PAWSome Second Week🐾
It's been another fantastic week at Fairfax High School, and I'm thrilled to report that Week Two has been PAWSome. Our students are truly settling into their routines, and it's been exciting to see them begin to deeply explore their content areas. We had a great time meeting with the Class of 2027 and 2028 as we highlight our goals and plans for the year.
The curiosity and engagement in our classrooms is remarkable. This week, our students were demonstrating physics and aerodynamics with paper airplanes, analyzing the theme and tone of nature-based poems all while learning outside, exploring the third dimension of photography, and mastering angle relationships in math. In science, they were focused on understanding lab safety and the characteristics of life. These dynamic learning experiences are a testament to the creativity and dedication of our teachers and the enthusiasm of our students.
We're all extremely excited for our "Unite and Excite" event TONIGHT! This unique tailgating event features over 40 of our amazing FHS clubs and activities on hand, each highlighting their mission, playing games, and recruiting new members. It's the perfect opportunity to see the incredible variety of offerings within our school community and find your place and your people.
Following the tailgating fun, we'll kick off our first home football game of the season! Come out and support our Fairfax Lions as they take on the Langley Saxons. Let's embrace our community and champion our school spirit and sportsmanship tonight. CHEER, DANCE, The MARCHING LIONS BAND, and FAIRFAX FOOTBALL are ready for YOU! THIS IS FAIRFAX and it will be EPIC.
Next week is Back to School Night! We look forward to seeing each of you on Thursday, September 4 from 6:30-8:00. This is a great night to connect with your child's teachers and partner together for an amazing year.
In partnership always,

Calendar Reminder: Labor Day Weekend

Friday, August 29, and Monday, September 1, are Labor Day holidays for all FCPS employees and students. We hope everyone takes the long weekend to celebrate a strong start to the school year and enjoy time with family and friends. See the complete school year calendar.

✅Special Election - No School September 9
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has set Tuesday, September 9, as the date for a special election in Virginia’s 11th Congressional District. Because more than half of our schools serve as polling locations, the Fairfax County Office of Elections asked us to consider closing for the day. Therefore, all FCPS schools will be closed on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

Volunteer FCPS
Ensuring Student Safety: Register for Volunteer FCPS
At Fairfax High School, our volunteers are a vital part of our school community. We deeply value the time and care they give to our students.
Recent updates to our volunteer process focus on one primary goal: keeping students safe.
These updates — such as checks against the sex offender registry and, in some cases, criminal background checks — are safety measures that will help us maintain a secure and supportive learning environment for every student in our care.
We encourage all our parents and community members interested in supporting our students by volunteering at school to visit Volunteer FCPS, click “Learn More,” and then “Sign Up.” After you create a profile, you will view an orientation video and complete a volunteer application.
Volunteer FCPS ensures a safe, consistent, and welcoming environment at all of our schools. All volunteers must be registered in Volunteer FCPS. This includes individuals who volunteer to chaperone on field trips, work at book fairs, and help out regularly in classrooms, libraries, or cafeterias. Volunteers who work unsupervised with students will also be required to undergo a background check.
We understand these changes may seem disruptive, especially for long-time volunteers. Our intent is to ensure that our students feel safe and supported with each and every person they encounter at school.
As a reminder, all volunteers — and visitors to a school — are required to sign in by scanning their ID at our visitor kiosk. Visit the Volunteer FCPS Frequently Asked Questions page to learn more.

Fairfax Lions Nice to Know:
Upcoming Changes to FCPS High School Transcripts
To provide a more comprehensive and accurate record of a student's educational journey, FCPS students’ transcripts will now specify the location where certain courses are taken. This change, which the School Board approved in December 2024, will affect courses taken at the following FCPS locations:
- FCPS High School Academies
- FCPS Interagency Alternative Schools
- FCPS Online Campus
- Classes taken concurrently at other FCPS schools
Starting Friday, September 26, students’ transcripts will list these courses under a separate heading for the corresponding program. Transcripts and report cards printed before this date will still show all courses listed under the student's base school.
This update will provide a clearer picture of the diverse academic opportunities our students are pursuing across the district.
If you have any questions, please reach out to our Student Services office.
SEL Screener Parent Notification and Updates
The Fall Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3 through 12 in October.
Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. This gives students a way to share how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.
After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families without a ParentVUE account. For more information including SEL Screener questions and opt-out information, please visit FCPS’ Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

💻 Schoology Parent Accounts
Teachers use Schoology to post their classroom materials online; to provide a secure forum for students to discuss their ideas and collaborate on projects; and to assign and collect homework electronically. It helps students stay organized, and it keeps the class connected.
A Schoology Parent Account gives you access to:
- Your child’s classes.
- Your child’s upcoming assignments.
- School, class, and group announcements.
Parent accounts will be available after Monday, August 18. To access Schoology, parents will need to have an active SIS/ParentVUE account. Get more information on how to login and use Schoology.
🏈 Touchdown! Girls Flag Football Takes the Field This Fall
Starting this fall, we’re piloting Girls Flag Football along with every high school in FCPS, thanks to a partnership with the Washington Commanders. With college scholarships already available and Olympic inclusion coming in 2028, there’s never been a better time to join. Interested students should stop by the Activities Office to find out more. Watch this hype video to learn more about this empowering team sport. Read more about flag football in FCPS.
🍎Help Your Child Navigate the Lunch Line
Help your child get through the lunch line quickly and have more time to eat:
- Teach your child their student ID number to receive meals at school.
- Sign up for and add money to MySchoolBucks to purchase meals at school.
-
Apply for free and reduced-price meals. Students who were approved for free and reduced-price meals last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should submit a new application as soon as possible, so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.
If your child has any food allergies, learn how to submit accommodations for dietary restrictions and allergens.
Access menus for breakfast, lunch, and other school meals, as well as allergen and nutrition information.
🚌 Transportation Patience and Safety
Thank you for your patience as we all get used to new routines this school year. We appreciate our families following Kiss and Ride procedures and being patient while waiting for your children’s buses.
If your student’s bus is delayed, you may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report. Email messages will be sent to announce significant bus delays. Please contact the Transportation Office at [phone number] with any additional questions. For concerns after 5:30 p.m., contact the FCPS Office of Safety and Security at 571-423-2000.
Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE to make sure you receive email messages about bus delays.
