Families,
As we begin summer break, our team is reflecting on the many great things we accomplished and experienced together this year. Thank you for your support of our administration and—most importantly—your child’s teacher(s). The partnership between home and school is what truly makes Washington Mill such a special place.
Standards of Learning (SOL) test scores and other end-of-year data are beginning to come in. While the Virginia Department of Education’s new accountability system includes components that won’t be fully available for some time, our own analysis gives us much to celebrate. I’m proud to share that we’ve improved our pass rates in Reading, Math, and Science compared to last year. We also reduced chronic absenteeism and saw significant growth on the WIDA assessment, which measures English language development for our multilingual learners. These results are a testament to the dedication of our teachers, staff, and families working together as one team.
This is our final weekly community message for the 2024–25 school year. We’ll go quiet for a few weeks as most of our staff enjoy a well-earned break and our outstanding custodial team works hard to prepare the building and campus for a strong start in August.
Have a wonderful summer and thank you for your continued support. We hope your children enjoy a safe, joyful, and restful break.
Warm regards,
Brad Bennink

Below is our Chronic Absenteeism rate as of June 11, 2025.
The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school. Medication left in the health room after that time will be destroyed. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. However, with parent or guardian permission, a high school student may transport over-the-counter medications to and from the school health room. If your student will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, the existing medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program, but you will need to pick up the medication on the last day of school and deliver the medication and completed forms to the summer learning site on the first day of the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).
