Flint Hill Updates

Good Afternoon Flint Hill Families,

Thank you to the many families, students and staff who joined us on Saturday for the Falcon Fun Run! It was a joy to see over 200 participants running and walking in a friendly challenge on our track. Thank you for supporting FHES and the PTA!

This morning 5th grade students were surprised when their teachers were replaced by Greek gods and goddesses (temporarily). The students were challenged by Zeus (also known as Mr. Dickenson) to select his replacement while Zeus takes a long awaited vacation. Students in 5th grade will now research Greek mythology and prepare persuasive speeches to advocate for who should fill in for Zeus while he is away. The project will be capped off by a presentation of speeches to families and classmates.

Tonight, beginning strings students will showcase their skills at their spring concert. It will be a great opportunity for Ms. Mims and her students to share their hard work with families. Next week, 5th and 6th grade band, chorus and strings will perform for families on Thursday, May 29th to show off their hard work. Bravo!

Did you see that school supply kits are ready to be ordered from the PTA for next year? Look in the message below for details about how to order supplies for your students for the upcoming school year.

Also be sure to save the date for summer FHES PTA Kindergarten Playdates! Dates in May, June, July and August have been scheduled for rising K students and families to gather at FHES before the new year begins!

Kindly,

Mr. Montaquila, Principal

Mr. Baker, Assistant Principal

Student Testing Results Coming Soon

pencil

Throughout May and June, you will receive your child’s spring assessment results. If you aren’t sure what assessments your child took this year, there is a list of tests by grade level on the FCPS website.

How the results are delivered depends on the test. Scores will be delivered in SIS ParentVUE or from the school or testing organization. Learn what to expect regarding assessment reporting practices and timelines

Visit FCPS’ website for additional information about how test results are reported to families. Individual test websites provide report translations and help for interpreting test results. Please contact us with any testing questions or for additional information about how we use test results to support student success.

Support Your Child’s Success in SIS ParentVUE Signing up for a SIS ParentVUE account helps you to support your child’s academic success! Caregivers can view important information like attendance, grades, progress reports, and assessment scores through ParentVUE.

Once you have activated a ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. Information about students in the same family can be accessed through the same ParentVUE account. A SIS ParentVUE app is available for Apple and Android devices.

Need help creating a SIS ParentVue account? This video walks through the steps. Find out more about SIS ParentVUE.

If you already have an account, be sure your contact information is up-to-date. Parents/guardians can update their phone numbers or email addresses in the Parent/Guardian section. Find more information and an FAQ online.

Common Sense Media Award

Common Sense Media

Common Sense, the national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids and families thrive in a world of media and technology, has recognized Flint Hill Elementary as a Common Sense School.

Flint Hill has demonstrated its commitment to taking a whole-community approach to preparing its students to think critically and use technology responsibly to learn, create, and participate while preparing them for the perils that exist in the online realm, such as plagiarism, loss of privacy, and cyberbullying. With the right support, kids can take ownership of their digital lives, engage with real issues, and change their communities for the better. The recognition acknowledges our school's commitment to creating a culture of digital citizenship.

We're honored to be recognized as a Common Sense School. By preparing our students to use technology safely and responsibly, we are providing them an opportunity to build lifelong habits to help them succeed in a tech-driven world.

Boundary

Families, staff, and community members will soon be able to explore and visualize potential boundary scenarios using a customized Boundary Explorer Tool. The tool will be accessible from the FCPS website. You are also invited to participate in another series of community meetings in order to review and reflect on the initial draft scenarios before the start of summer break:

Each meeting will be hybrid, meaning that you may attend in person or via Zoom. Childcare for in-person participants and language interpretation/translation for all participants will be available as needed. Registration links will be shared soon. Another round of community meetings will be held in the fall.

Visit FCPS’ Comprehensive Boundary Review page for more information.

VDH Immunization Packets for Rising 7th Graders

health graphic

As required by the Code of Virginia, parents or legal guardians need to provide proof of immunizations for their child to attend public school. All students entering seventh grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations:

  • Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap) given at age 7 or older.
  • Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) given at age 10 or older.
  • A complete series of 2 doses of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
  • After reviewing educational materials approved by the Board of Health, the parent or guardian, at the parents/guardians sole discretion, may elect for the child not to receive the HPV vaccine.

Parents/guardians are encouraged to plan ahead by scheduling an appointment with their child’s health care provider now to avoid the rush this summer. If your child does not have a health care provider, please visit the FCPS Immunizations Resource page to find out where to get an immunization.

Please review the Virginia Department of Health Information Packet for more information on rising 7th grade immunization requirements.

When a Student Should Stay Home From School

Telephone

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your child succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your child stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when to keep your child at home.

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify their teacher so that support can be provided if needed. Also, keep an open line of communication with your school's public health staff.

Read about how families can help form good attendance habits. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

FHES Family Handbook

FHES Logo

Good communication between home and school is vital to a successful school experience for each child. Questions relating to your child should be directed to the classroom teacher. All teachers have voice mail and an e-mail address. The school has a web page that links directly to each teacher’s e-mail.

Each year, FCPS produces a Handbook for its FCPS families. It contains valuable information you may need throughout the year, including calendars, services, and special programs, the instructional program, and information about starting school. Flint Hill Elementary has produced a handbook that includes some additional notes that are important for our school community.
