Mustang Memo 5.23.25

picnic

Note from Dr. Sheers

As we get ready for our School-wide Picnic and Field Day on Friday, May 30, please take note of the following important reminders:

  1. Students should wear their Mustang House color, as they will be participating in Field Day activities with their House teams.

  2. Students should pack a lunch. The cafeteria is only open for pre-ordered bagged lunches.
  3. Students can earn House Tokens for demonstrating good sportsmanship. We encourage you to talk with your child(ren) about the spirit of Field Day—it’s all about having fun, not just winning!

  4. Our School-wide Picnic will begin at 11:45 a.m. Students should bring a towel to sit on, and families are welcome to join us for lunch.

  5. If you plan to join us at any point during the day—whether volunteering or attending the picnic—you must bring your driver’s license and sign in at the main office before joining your student(s).

End of School Year MEDICATION PICK UP REMINDER
Please plan accordingly to pick up your student’s medications!  All medication must be collected on June 11, 2025 no later than 1:25 pm, any medications left in the health room after that time will be discarded. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student.

If your student will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, the existing medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program, but you will need to pick up the medication on the last day of school and deliver the medication and completed forms to the summer learning site on the first day of the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s). If you have any questions, please reach out to your Public Health Nurse, Maricel Villarivera, at 703-912-4410.

Safety Patrol Team Applications
Students interested in becoming a safety patrol must complete this Google Form Application. Applications are due by June 6th.  WSES has 35 patrol spots available, so unfortunately, not all applicants will receive a position.

After all applications are gathered, we will seek recommendations from all teachers to aid in the selection process. Captains will be assigned, and a roster will be created. For those not initially selected, a waiting list will be established based on our needs for walker or bus duties. Any updates will be communicated promptly. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out at Wfaleman@fcps.edu.

Spring and Class Photos
Victor O’Neill Studios has your child’s spring photos and class photos ready to order.  Access photos by using your student ID as the online code.  https://www.vosphoto.com/underclass

If you have any questions please contact them at underclass@vosphoto.com

Required Immunizations for Rising 7th and 12th Graders
Additional immunizations are required for students entering 7th and 12th grades. All students entering 7th grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations prior to the beginning of school: Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap), Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY), and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. Please consider getting your child’s immunizations early so that they can attend school in the fall. Summer is a busy time for families and healthcare providers. As long as your child meets the age requirements listed above, they can be immunized at any time. Additional resources are available on the FCPS Immunization Resources webpage and the Fairfax County Health Department.

Support The Crayon Initiative – Recycle for a Cause! 🖍️
Do you have old, broken, or unwanted crayons lying around? Don’t toss them - donate them!

Our school is collecting used crayons to support The Crayon Initiative, a nonprofit that recycles crayons into new ones and donates them to children’s hospitals across the country. This program not only helps reduce landfill waste but also brings color, creativity, and joy to kids in need.

📦 Collection Dates: May 27 - June 11

📍 Drop-Off Location: West Springfield ES Front Lobby - Box

Let’s work together to make a big impact with something as small as a crayon!

Last Day of School Dismissal
We will dismiss 2 hours early at 1:30 on the last day of school, Wednesday, June 11, 2025.

Fairfax County Public Library Reading Challenge (June 11 – August 17, 2025)

Our Summer Reading Adventure is for YOUTH and ADULTS, and participating is as easy as 1-2-3!

  • Beginning June 4, go to fairfaxcounty.beanstack.org and register for the Summer Reading Adventure appropriate for you or your children.
  • Depending on your age, earn ten or fifteen virtual badges by reading or listening to books, reading for 20 or 30 minutes, completing activities, or a combination of all three.
  • Once you have met the reading goals for your age/grade, visit your local library branch and receive prizes for finishing the program!

Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program for Kids in Grades 1-6
Participation is a fun and easy way for kids to earn free books. They simply read a designated number of books – library books, books borrowed from friends, or books bought at Barnes & Noble – write about their favorite part in our Reading Journal, and bring a completed Reading Journal to a Barnes & Noble bookstore. Children then choose their free book from the books listed on the Reading Journal and collect their free book from a store near them during July and August. Click here to get your copy of the 2025 Summer Reading Journal form. Happy reading!
