Music Tells a Story

As part of our Music Tells a Story unit, 6th grade students explored how music and sound can shape a viewer’s experience. They discovered how different sound clips—whether suspenseful, silly, or dramatic—can transform the mood and meaning of a scene. This project helped students understand the powerful role that sound plays in storytelling, reinforcing the idea that music isn’t just something we hear—it’s something that helps us make connections.

New Hope Housing Donation Drive

New Hope Housing is organizing a donation drive to collect essential materials for care bags that will be distributed to members of our unhoused community. These bags will include vital items such as hygiene products, non-perishable snacks, socks, water bottles, winter necessities, and other daily necessities. Your support can make a meaningful difference—every donation, big or small, helps bring comfort and dignity to those in need. Please consider contributing supplies or funds to help us assemble these care bags and show our unhoused neighbors.

The donation drive will be Wednesday, June 4th at UMES from 5:00pm-7:00pm. Every in-person donation will receive a free box of cookies, while supplies last.  The list of requested supplies can be found in the PDF below.

For those unable to attend the collection drive but would like to participate, please consider visiting our Amazon Wish List. For any questions or to arrange for a different drop-off option, please contact Traci Peterson (tracilpeterson@gmail.com or 609-462-8259).

EcoCode Competition for UMES

Our UMES GET2GREEN team is currently working on earning our green Eco Flag!  One of the requirements of earning the flag is to have a school competition to design our school’s EcoCode!  This is where you come in! Create a logo, acrostic poem, song or other writing/drawing that shows UMES’s commitment to recycling, minimizing waste, reusing items and our commitment to sustainability! Digital artwork is great too! Examples of how to create an EcoCode can be found here.  Submissions should be given to Mrs. Murray or Mrs. Schroder ASAP.  The whole school will get to vote for their favorite!

Wednesday Help Wanted!

Are you a parent who comes regularly on Wednesdays to pick up your student(s) at the end of the day?  Our Get2Green team is looking for an adult to help them when they are doing their weekly Wednesday recycling.  We are looking for an adult to come into the building at 3:15pm in the main office to supervise the students as they weigh and wheel the recycling bins out to the dumpster behind the main office. If you are available to help, please contact Ami Schroder at amschroder@fcps.edu  and thank you for helping us to continue our recycling efforts!

Health Room Medications

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school. Medication left in the health room after that time will be destroyed. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. However, with parent or guardian permission, a high school student may transport over-the-counter medications to and from the school health room. If your student will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, the existing medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program, but you will need to pick up the medication on the last day of school and deliver the medication and completed forms to the summer learning site on the first day of the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).

Field Days are Coming!

Field Days are coming soon! These special events could not happen without our amazing parent volunteers. Kindergarteners will participate on Thursday, June 5, from 9:30- 11 am. First and second graders will play from 1-3 pm on June 5. On Friday, June 6, the fifth and sixth graders will join us from 9:15- 11:00 am. The third and fourth graders will participate from 1:15- 3:00 pm on June 6.

We need volunteers to make this happen for your children. Volunteers are asked to check-in outside of the main front doors with their driver’s license. Please do not park in the bus loop and plan to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the field day start time. After checking in, volunteers will walk through the lobby to the blacktop. If you are available to supervise a station, please CLICK HERE. Volunteers need to be at least 18 years old and no younger siblings, middle school, or high school students are invited.   Thank you for understanding.

***If you have any kids' plastic play food and are willing to donate it, please send to school with "ATTENTION: PE (Field Day)".

We are looking forward to a great event for all students! Please send your child to school with a full water bottle that has their name on it. Sunscreen and hats are recommended as well. If you have any questions, please contact Manda Tirado at mktirado@fcps.edu.

Thank you!

Kick-off to Kindergarten

Kindergarten Registration

Our registrar, Catherine Dubas, is still accepting registrations for incoming kindergarteners, as well as for families moving into our boundary from other schools.  If you have a friend or new neighbor who may be interested, please invite them to email Catherine at cmdubas@fcps.edu with the student's date of birth and home address.  Catherine will respond with the registration details to start the process. Families also can go to www.fcps.edu for complete information:  General Registration Requirements | Fairfax County Public Schools.

We are hoping to have families completely registered by July 15, 2025 in order to facilitate the best classroom placement for all students.

2025-2026 Yearbook Committee

Are you interested in helping create next year’s yearbook?  UMES is looking for interested parents to join a yearbook committee to create the 2025-2026 yearbook in the fall.  Most of the work can be done from home as the yearbook software is online. No prior experience is necessary but it is helpful if you are familiar with working with photos. If you are interested, please complete this form https://forms.gle/wATcXYYteAkBi5x98
