⏸️Weekly Woodlawn Pause with Ms. Hill

  • Hello Woodlawn Families!

  • Enjoy this week’s Woodlawn Pause called TONING WITH THE VOWEL SOUNDS.

  • Toning is when we create a sound with our voice that creates a certain vibration in our bodies.  It gives us time to focus on deep breathing and sound.  Focusing on the sensation of the sound in our body can signal the nervous system to activate a relaxation response whenever we might need it.

  • Toning with the vowel sounds of A, E, I , O , U can be nice to do before falling asleep at night or before you have to perform or do something you might feel nervous about.  Try repeating the tone you like the most several times for a minute or more.

  • You access the video here.

💡SOL Tips and Dates

This is Mr. McGuin, Assistant Principal, and I wanted to remind 3rd, 4th,5th and 6th grade families that the SOLs (Standards of Learning) are coming up.

Below dates and testing taking tips.

Dates:

  • Grade 3: 5/15/25 Reading SOL, 5/19/25 Math SOL
  • Grade 4: 5/13/25 Reading SOL, 5/20/25 Math SOL
  • Grade 5: 5/7/25 Reading SOL, 5/14/25 Science SOL, 5/22/25 Math SOL
  • Grade 6: 5/8/25 Reading SOL, 5/22/25 Math SOL

Tips

     1. Don’t “Cram”

  • It is not a good idea to spend hours memorizing the material you need the night before the test

    2.  Get a Good Night’s Sleep

  • Showing up to school well-rested is one of the best things you can do to succeed on test day.

    3. Eat a Healthy Breakfast

  • Eating a healthy breakfast is an important part test taking preparation. After all, it’s hard to think clearly if your stomach is grumbling.

    4. Listen to the Instructions

  • Be sure to pay close attention to the instructions before you get started.

    5. Check Your Work

  • When you finish your test.  Go back through and double check your answers.

Thank you so much families!

Please consider getting your child’s immunizations early so that they can attend school in the fall.

📉FCPS Budget Update

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will begin finalizing the budget on Tuesday, Maya 6.

The current advertised budget underfunds FCPS by $150 million.

Without new revenue, such as the meals tax (adding just $2-3 to an average dining bill for a family of four), FCPS will face significant cuts.

What Is at Risk?

  • Here are just a few examples where FCPS exceeds the minimum State standards:
    • Activities and Athletics
    • Advanced Academic Resource Teachers
    • Class Sizes
    • Elementary Art, Music, PE teachers
    • Elementary Special Education Lead Teachers
    • Adult Education and Nontraditional programs
    • Cybersecurity
    • Safety and Security
  • These are in addition to cuts that the Fairfax County Government already announced to programs that support our schools:
    • Middle School After School programs
    • School Crossing Guards
    • Public Health Nurses supporting our schools

Go to fcps.edu/crossroads to see examples of where FCPS exceeds minimum state standards.
