Therapy Dogs visited for Fun Friday!

March 21, 2025
Happy Friday Fairfax Families,
Spring is officially here! This week, we celebrated Lucky to be a Lion Spirit Week, and it was filled with fun and excitement! Students had a blast searching for gold coins on St. Patrick's Day, competing in Minute to Win It games at lunch, and wrapping up the festivities with Fun Friday, which offered a variety of engaging activities, including crocheting, basketball, and video games. We also had the pleasure of welcoming therapy dogs, providing students with the opportunity to relax and enjoy time with furry friends.
Dual Enrollment Course Registration
A major focus this week was dual enrollment course registration in partnership with Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA). Thanks to the onsite enrollment process, supported by NOVA admissions staff and our school counselors, our students have a seamless pathway to high-level coursework and college credit opportunities.
A Special Visit from Superintendent Dr. Reid
We were honored to welcome FCPS Superintendent Dr. Reid to Fairfax High School this week! During her visit, she engaged with students and staff, delivering PAWSitive referrals and experiencing firsthand the incredible learning happening in our classrooms. Some highlights included:
-
P-FIT Training: Dr. Reid pumped some iron with Coach Taylor and Coach Frank in the weight room.
-
AP Seminar: She observed students refining their research questions with Ms. Davids.
-
Biology: She joined Ms. Willis and Ms. Mikail as students reflected on SOL questions.
-
ESOL Class: She saw students strengthening their writing and speaking skills with Ms. Freeman.
Spring Fashion Show
To cap off an amazing week, our talented fashion marketing students presented their much-anticipated Spring Fashion Show to the student body. Under the guidance of Ms. Walter, students took charge of every aspect of the production—from securing fashions through partnerships with local businesses to designing the sets, writing scripts, recruiting models, and overseeing the entire implementation. It was PAWSome!
There is only one week of the quarter left. Take advantage of your final opportunities for Lion Time, coach class, and The Learning Lounge.
In partnership and collaboration,

Dr. Reid visits FHS! 🦁

Girls Who Code

Last month, GWC members joined in on a field trip to Katherine Johnson Middle School to teach an hour of code activity. GWC members engaged with students through the different levels on the coding platform, CodeJIKA. In this platform, students were guided through the different levels that helped them create their own CV website. This platform pushed the students to challenge themselves and think creatively, thus making their cv websites one of a kind. We plan to go back and do this again! Students, if you are interested, join us at our weekly meetings, every Friday after school from 3 to 4!

Become Unskippable: Share the Facts
Talking with teens about the facts of fentanyl is a conversation you can’t skip. Learning about fentanyl gives teens a better understanding of the risks and effects of the drug.
Share these important facts with your child:
- Even half a fentanyl-laced pill can be fatal. Just a few salt-sized grains of fentanyl are enough to cause an overdose.
- More than half of local street pills contain a deadly dose of fentanyl. As of 2023, seven in
10 counterfeit pills in the U.S. contain enough fentanyl to cause a fatal overdose.
- Fentanyl is usually taken accidentally. Many people have no idea they’ve taken it until they overdose because you can’t see, smell, or taste it in pills and powders.
- Overdose can happen in an instant. In as little as four minutes, the lack of oxygen can lead to brain damage and even death.
Learn more about how to have conversations with your child in a way that will make you Become Unskippable.

🛑Bus Stop Arm Cameras

Cameras have been installed on the stop arms of 50 FCPS school buses. These cameras will be used to identify drivers who pass stopped school buses while children are entering and exiting the bus (called a “stop arm violation”).
Warnings for drivers will begin on Wednesday, April 9. After a 30-day warning period, citations will begin to be issued on Monday, May 12.
According to Virginia law, drivers must stop for stopped school buses with flashing red lights on and their stop signs extended. Motorists should stop when approaching from any direction (unless there is a barrier or median separating their lane from where the bus is stopped). They should remain stopped until everyone is clear and the bus is moving.
We appreciate our law enforcement partners for working with us to improve road safety and reduce accidents. Read more information about the stop arm cameras and all of the ways that we work with our county partners to keep students safe on their way to and from school.
