Letter from the Principals

Dear Gunston Families,

March is off to a fantastic start! We are incredibly proud of our students’ performances during this week’s Dance Extravaganza. Their hard work, dedication, and enthusiasm truly shined. A huge thank you to our staff for their support in preparing students for this special event.  Our performance of Aladdin is quickly approaching, the students are dedicated to make this an amazing performance.

As we transition into spring, we continue to see an increase in student absences due to illness. To help us monitor potential outbreaks, please report your child’s symptoms when notifying the school of their absence. As a reminder, students should remain home until they are fever-free for 24 hours without medication or follow their doctor’s guidance. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our school community healthy.

This month, all grade levels will meet with administration for a Student Rights and Responsibilities review to reinforce expectations for behavior and digital citizenship. We encourage families to revisit the technology policy at home. FCPS-issued devices and accounts should only be used for school-related activities. In addition, we ask for your support in monitoring your child’s access and interactions on social media. We have recently needed to address inappropriate online behavior that has impacted students at school. Please take a moment to discuss internet safety and responsible digital use with your child.

Finally, we want to celebrate the incredible progress our students are making! Their commitment to learning and growth is inspiring. As we move through the school year, we encourage all students to continue putting forth 100% Effort, 100% of the Time—because every step forward makes a difference!

Thank you for your continued support in making Gunston Elementary a wonderful place to learn and grow.

Warm regards,

Ms. Rucinski and Mr. Barton

Kindergarten Registration: It's as Easy as 1-2-3...

Last weeks STEM/Science Fair

Wow! The Science Fair was amazing! We saw so many cool projects made by our students. At STEM Night, families got to try lots of fun hands-on activities. Ms. Schroeder did a super job putting it all together! Big thanks to all the businesses and clubs that showed us real STEM jobs and activities. We loved learning about all the cool things we can do with science outside of school!

Bus Stop Arm Cameras

Cameras Installed on School Bus Stop Arms -Cameras have been installed on the stop arms of 50 FCPS school buses. These cameras will be used to identify drivers who pass stopped school buses while children are entering and exiting the bus (called a “stop arm violation”).

Warnings for drivers will begin on Wednesday, April 9. After a 30-day warning period, citations will begin to be issued on Monday, May 12.

According to Virginia law, drivers must stop for stopped school buses with flashing red lights on and their stop signs extended. Motorists should stop when approaching from any direction (unless there is a barrier or median separating their lane from where the bus is stopped). They should remain stopped until everyone is clear and the bus is moving.

We appreciate our law enforcement partners for working with us to improve road safety and reduce accidents. Read more information about the stop arm cameras and all of the ways that we work with our county partners to keep students safe on their way to and from school.
