From the Principal’s Pen

Dear Laurel Hill Families,

We hope you are enjoying reading A Boy Called Bat!  Our 5th and 6th grade students enjoyed an assembly yesterday from Dr. Jorgenson, the director of the Mason Life Program.  Dr, Jorgenson shared how students with Autism and other developmental disabilities can be successful in college and beyond, through the Mason Life Program. On Monday, March 3 our K-3 students will enjoy an assembly connected to our book with a veterinarian from a local animal hospital.  We are gearing up for the grand finale of Literacy Night. We hope all will be able to attend our Literacy Night next week on March 6, 2025 from 6-8 pm.  Please check out the One School, One Book website for more information.

Next week we will also be celebrating Read Across America week!  Please see the flyer below for more details.  It is going to be an exciting and fun week.

As a gentle reminder, if your child will be absent or late to school, there are 3 different ways to notify the school. Call (703) 551-5353 and leave a message 24/7 on the Attendance line, email LaurelHillElem.Attendance@fcps.edu or Login to Parent VUE.

Sincerely,

Janice Dalton, Principal

Addison Smith, Assistant Principal

Thmeaka Traylor, Assistant Principal

Parents Need To Know

Eating Disorder Parent Information- Grades 5 and 6

The Code of Virginia, 22.1-273.2 requires schools provide, on an annual basis, parents/guardians educational information regarding eating disorders for students in grades five through twelve.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023), Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives. There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources to be provided to parents and guardians of Fairfax County Public Schools. This information may be found at Eating Disorders
