From the Principal’s Pen

Dear Laurel Hill Families,

The winter not only brought frigid temperatures, but it also brought cold and flu season. Please carefully read the Health Reminders below from our healthcare team. Our staff (custodians, health team, faculty) and students are taking all the necessary precautions to ensure our building is clean and reducing the spread of germs. Let's continue working together for a healthy school community!

Quarter two ends next week, January 28. January 29 is a teacher workday, and there is no school for students. Teachers are working diligently to monitor student progress in order to share your students' academics and citizenship in the upcoming progress reports. Parents can view progress reports in ParentVue Tuesday, February 4, and a hard copy will be sent home with students Wednesday, February 5.

If you know any families in our Laurel Hill Elementary community who are not receiving our school newsletter and missing out on valuable information, please share our subscription link here to sign up for our News You Choose, the latest school announcements.

Sincerely,

Janice Dalton, Principal

Addison Smith, Assistant Principal

Thmeaka Traylor, Assistant Principal

Health Reminders

Flu season is here, and we all want to keep our students healthy and safe. Please remind your child to practice good hygiene, such as washing their hands frequently and covering their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.

If your child is feeling unwell, especially with flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, or body aches, we ask that you to keep them at home to rest and recover and be fever free for 24 hours without medication, before returning to school. This helps prevent the spread of illness to others.

We are also seeing an increase in gastrointestinal symptoms, such as vomiting and diarrhea. A reminder to please keep your child home for at least 24hrs after vomiting has stopped- we would love to see a decrease in all illnesses!

Thank you for your support in keeping our school community healthy. If you have any questions or need additional information, please feel free to reach out.

Support Literacy at Home

Looking for ways to help support your child’s reading and writing at home? Visit the FCPS Literacy Resource page for tips and information about the Virginia Language and Literacy Screening System.

🧥 Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

Winter weather is here! As a reminder, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy time outdoors. Schools monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside for activities like recess or physical education.

If you need assistance getting cold-weather clothing for your family, please contact our school’s family liaison, Teresa Smith. You may also contact Fairfax County Coordinated Services Planning (CSP) at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health care.
