January 9th, 2025
Good Afternoon Flint Hill Families,
I hope your students and your families have been able to enjoy time to play, relax and connect during the winter vacation and recent snow days. We are eager and excited to return to our regular schedules and welcome students back to school soon. I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to the FHES custodial team for their efforts to clear snow and ice from our school grounds and the deep cleaning and preparations they have made to ensure our school building is ready to welcome students back to school.
Mark your calendars! We have several upcoming school events. Heritage and Traditions night will be on Wednesday, January 22nd from 5-7 pm in the FHES gym. See the message below about how you can be involved or join the event. The winter chorus, band and strings concert will be held at JMHS on Thursday, January 23rd at 7:00 pm. Come out to see our students share their talents of the big stage! Finally, please join us for the next (rescheduled) PTA meeting on Thursday, January 16th at 5:15 pm in the FHES library. We hope to see you there!
I am excited to share that Flint Hill ES will welcome four student teachers from Seoul National University in South Korea during the weeks of January 15th and 20th. These aspiring educators will be observing and assisting teachers in four classrooms at Flint Hill during this time and gaining valuable insights into the teaching methods and the vibrant learning environment that Flint Hill fosters. This unique opportunity not only benefits the interns, but also enriches our school community by providing different perspectives and fostering international educational exchange. The student teachers will be supervised by esteemed professors from their university, ensuring a seamless and enriching experience for all involved.
With regards,
Mr. Montaquila, Principal
Mr. Baker, Assistant Principal

The School Board approved plans for a new FHES playground at the December 5th School Board Meeting!
Removal of the current playground structures and installation of the new playground will begin later this spring and is expected to be completed before the end of the school year. While there will be a few weeks of construction at FHES, our students will continue to have access to our fields, blacktops and the recently completed futsal and basketball courts.
More information about the project can be found here.
Thank you to the FCPS School Board and FCPS Facilities for supporting this investment in resources for our school and community!

We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside. We are notified by safety and security if the temperatures get too low. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing (labeled with the name!), so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. On the majority of days, students will go outside for recess.
Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made. FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated. Be sure to plan for the winter season.
If you need assistance getting cold weather clothing for your family, please call Fairfax County Coordinated Services Planning (CSP) at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and healthcare.

We did it! FHES has surpassed the 250 lb goal for plastic collection and we still have more to tally. Please continue to gather your plastic items for donations and let's keep moving toward out 1000 lb goal in January!
Plastic items that can be included in the challenge are detailed in the image below. Plastic collection bins are located in the main lobby.
Keep saving your plastic and bring your collections back to FHES in January!

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.
Help your child succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your child stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when to keep your child at home.
If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify their teacher so that support can be provided if needed. Also, keep an open line of communication with your school's public health staff.

Good communication between home and school is vital to a successful school experience for each child. Questions relating to your child should be directed to the classroom teacher. All teachers have voice mail and an e-mail address. The school has a web page that links directly to each teacher’s e-mail.
Each year, FCPS produces a Handbook for its FCPS families. It contains valuable information you may need throughout the year, including calendars, services, and special programs, the instructional program, and information about starting school. Flint Hill Elementary has produced a handbook that includes some additional notes that are important for our school community.
