Wishing You a Wonderful Winter Break

Dear Fairhill Families,

As the calendar year comes to a close, we want to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude to our students and families for the wonderful gift of collaboration and joy you bring us each day. Fairhill is an incredibly special place, and we believe it is home to some of the best students, families, and community in all of FCPS. Thank you for the fantastic start to the school year, and please know that your children bring us immense joy each day. While the upcoming break is much needed for everyone, we want you to know that your students will be greatly missed over the next two weeks.

As you head into the winter break season, we recognize that many students will transition from a rigorous school day to a quieter, calmer home environment. Today’s students often have busier schedules than ever before, so we encourage you to help them discover the value of rest, reflection, and stillness.

That being said, we know that many of you may also want to support continued learning during the break. We would like to remind you of one valuable Fairhill resource and two new FCPS webpages that may be helpful.

  1. Fairhill Student Websites - This is the webpage that students can use to access many learning resources from home on either a computer, phone, or tablet. ST Math, MyOn and Newsela are all wonderful resources to consider.
  2.  FCPS Winter Break Resources - This is a new webpage for the winter break that provides resources (academic and non-academic) to families during break.
  3. Winter Activities - This new webpage on the FCPS website provides less structured and more creative ideas for students to engage in as a family.

We hope these resources are helpful and everyone enjoys a wonderful break.

With gratitude and appreciation,

Ted & Maura

Considerations for Technology

Watch

This holiday seasons may involve gifts for some families. Some of those gifts may be technology related. As a reminder, the FCPS SRR states: Phones must be silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day. Watches that serve a dual purpose (e.g., smart watch) may be worn; however, phone features (e.g., texting, Internet, calls, etc.) are to be off when phone use is prohibited. If your student is getting a smartwatch over break, please consider reviewing this website on School Mode to set your student up for success.

HOLIDAY GIFTING FOR FAIRHILL STAFF

Gift Giving

On the target date, the recipient will receive a notification and access to the gift. They can then read the greetings, send thank you notes, and choose how to redeem the collected amount into one or more gift cards from hundreds of brands.

GOTR

Volunteer Opportunity for GOTR

I am a parent and former Girls on the Run Coach looking for coaches to join me in starting a Girls on the Run program for 3rd-5th grade girls at Fairhill this spring. The 10 week program beginning March 3rd will include 2 weekly hour long practices that build toward completing a 5k on May 17th.  I hope to hold practices at 8:10 in the morning on Mondays and Fridays. Having three coaches will allow us to cover any coach who needs to be absent.

There is no specific background or fitness level required for coaches, so we are looking for anyone who is interested in mentoring/inspiring the girls at Fairhill ES! Coaches will participate in an online training and one 3 hour in person training to prepare for coaching. Please contact me (Laura Cooper) at lacooper22@gmail.com if you are interested or have any questions.

Help Us Erase Student Lunch Debt

Please consider donating to eliminate school lunch debt through our Educate Fairfax platform. All donations are tax deductible; you will receive a receipt for tax deduction purposes.

Free and Reduced Price Meal Applications

According to the Centers for Disease Control, eating breakfast at school is associated with better attendance rates, fewer missed school days, and better test scores. Families that are earning less than 185% of the poverty level can receive breakfast and lunch for their students at no cost.

Families must complete the Free and Reduced Price Meal application before the start of each school year. Approved applications may also qualify students for additional benefits. Look for the application in August, view criteria, and up-to-date information on the Free and Reduced-Price Meals webpage. Families should reach out to their schools with questions or for assistance.

Watch your email and our website for more information. Learn more about the Free and Reduced-Price Meal program online.
