Haycock Hello 11.4.24

kids

Dear Haycock Families,

It was great to see so many of you in the hallways enjoying our Kindergarten story book character parade on Thursday morning.  Our students also had a great time with their favorite book door decorations contest, a long standing tradition at Haycock. Our SCA judged the decorations and announced the classes that won before students left for home on 10/31. All the student created favorite book door decorations were amazing to us!

Teachers are working hard on grades, report cards, and finishing up parent conferences today and tomorrow.  We are so fortunate at Haycock to have the dedicated, hardworking, and caring staff that we have here.❤️

If you have suggestions about topics for our future Connections and Conversations Parent Coffees, please share your ideas on this form.

We look forward to honoring veterans in our school community on Friday when our 2nd graders will put on their Veteran's Day Assembly.

Please note that school picture retakes and make ups will be on Wednesday, November 6.

With appreciation for your partnership,

Liz Beaty, Principal embeaty@fcps.edu

Heather Boyd, AP   HABoyd@fcps.edu

Krystal Styles, AP   krstyles@fcps.edu

Elementary Language Arts Grading Updates

Our teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we check if your student needs extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).

Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. While these skills will be new to your child in the beginning of the year, the goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.

This means that when you get your child’s progress report soon, it might look different. Your child’s teacher will give you more information on the new progress reporting and how we’re making sure your child is getting any extra help they might need. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.

See below for ideas on how to help your child at home!

How to Help Your Student at Home

Reading and Writing

Please see this new FCPS Literacy Resource for Families.

We believe families are key to developing literacy. This page linked above has resources to help you encourage literacy at home. It also has information to help you partner with your student's teacher and our Haycock staff in supporting your student's literacy progress in reading and writing.

Fall Screener Parent Reports

The following screener assessments were administered to our students this fall.  Here are the dates when the results for parents will be or were available in SIS ParentVUE:

McLean HS Share Program

Share of McLean's Holiday Program kicks off on November 16! This year, Jack, a regular Share volunteer and McLean High School student, is leading a toy collection drive. He has created an Amazon wish list with items for kids ages 1 to 11, ranging from $10 to $15. Please check out the Amazon wish list If you would like to contribute, preferably by November 14.

Native American Month

November, Native American Heritage Month, is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native Americans. It is also a time to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges they have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.

🗳️ Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to complete a Federal Impact Aid Survey as soon as possible. The form is available in ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in).

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For more information, please watch this video on Impact Aid and visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.

Student Survey

Upcoming Student Experience Survey at Haycock

Our school has been selected to participate in a pilot program for the FCPS Student Experience Survey. This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.

A limited number of classes in grades 3-6 will be selected to participate. However, all students in participating grades, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email. We will administer the survey in selected classes during the school day between Monday, December 2, and Friday, December 13. Any student may take the survey at home, if preferred. You will receive a communication with details on how to preview the survey and opt your child out, if you choose.

We believe it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the five equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which focus on amplifying student voice and experiences as we work toward meeting plan goals.

Haycock/Longfellow Park Invasive Pull Event

Also known as Cougar Woods!

Do your part to mitigate climate change: Save trees!

Trees do an excellent job storing carbon and cooling the earth. Join in a community effort to save trees from invasive vines in the Haycock Longfellow Park (which is behind the Haycock playground) on Sunday, November 17 from 2-4 pm. We’ll be led by trained Tree Rescuers. No prior experience or great physical strength necessary. Supplies provided, but if you have garden tools and gloves, please bring them. All ages are welcome although elementary school students must be accompanied by an adult. Directions to the meet-up location are in the SignUpGenius below. Please sign up here:
