Principal Message
Good afternoon Roadrunner families,
In the coming days, you will receive a request for a parent-teacher conference from your child's teacher. Parent-teacher conferences are a critical aspect of our home-school communication and allow us to share your child's progress and areas of growth for the school year. Families with children in grades K-3 may have a VALLSS Reading Plan Intervention conference. The new state reading assessment of the VALLSS focuses on identifying student reading levels and areas of support for the upcoming school year. If your child is in need, we will share the information in the parent-teacher conference and details on how the school will support your child for the 2024 - 2025 school year.
As the seasons change, children must dress according to the shifting seasons. A layered approach to the seasons allows students to be warm in the morning when temperatures are at their coldest but still allows them to leave their heavier hoodies or coats in the classroom during recess. This is when we have the largest number of lost coats and jackets in our Lost and Found because kids go outside and forget them during recess. Please work with your child to remember that if you leave with a coat, you have to come home with a coat. What can always help the school identify your child's item is if you put their name and teacher in the coat. A great example is using their last name and teacher name: Legagneur, Ms. Boyd. This would go a long way to helping those lost items find their way home and keep you from buying another jacket during the season.
Warm Regards,
Dr. Legagneur, Mr. Barton, Ms.Champion, Ms. Kayes
On the second Monday of October and the month of November, people all over the United States celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Native American Heritage Month. Students deserve meaningful, sustained opportunities to learn about the diverse perspectives, experiences, and contributions of Indigenous people (globally) year-round, and these celebrations are an opportunity to honor these important stories.
To support teachers and school divisions to that end, FCPS Social Studies created The Indigenous Peoples' Day and Native American Heritage Month 180 Resource document. Teachers and school leaders will find ideas for classroom learning experiences across grade levels there. Schools may consider if information is shared through classes, school news programs, or other settings.
Please join us for the Lorton Station Anti-Bullying Spirit Week
National Bullying Prevention Month
October is National Bullying Prevention Month. To help develop a common understanding of Bullying, below is the FCPS definition.
Bullying in Students Rights and Responsibilities is defined as: “Any aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim; involves a real or perceived power imbalance between the aggressor or aggressors and victim; and is repeated over time or causes severe emotional trauma. “Bullying” includes cyberbullying. “Bullying” does not include ordinary teasing, horseplay, argument, or peer conflict.”
For more information on how FCPS handles a bullying situation please visit the FCPS Bullying Prevention and Intervention webpage. Our goal is to ensure all students feel safe and welcome at school. If you have questions and/or concerns about something that is going on at school, please contact the front office so that they can support you and most importantly your student.
