News and Notes

Heritage Night - October 24
We are excited and proud to host our annual Heritage Night on Thursday, October 24, 2024 from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.  If your child would like to participate in the student showcase, please fill out this form by October 11, 2024.  Keep an eye out for more information on food contributions and an opportunity to contribute family displays.

Pickup for appointments
When picking up your student we will require a photo ID from any person picking up a child during the school day.  Also, any person picking up a child during the school day must either be the custodial parent or stepparent with whom the child resides, or have written permission from the custodial parent.

Coffee & Candy
Thank you for your donations of coffee and candy!   A caffeinated staff is a happy staff!  They love a sweet treat as a pick me up throughout the day.  Please drop off any K-Cup or candy donations to the office to replenish our supply.

Students to Be Surveyed on Social-Emotional Learning
FCPS is committed to supporting the mental wellness of all students. The Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener helps our students share their perspectives on how their schools and communities support them and help them develop the skills they need to succeed.

The screener is offered to all students in grades 3 through 12 in the fall and spring. It addresses skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to plan programming for the division, schools, and individual students.

After each screening, results will be available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families who don’t have a ParentVUE account. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

Families who wish to opt their child out may do so by completing the opt-out form in the Annual Notice packet or SIS ParentVUE. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage or contact our front office.

Please note that the SEL Screener is not the same as the anonymous Fairfax County Youth Survey, which will take place later this fall.

Volunteer Opportunities
We welcome parent volunteers in the classroom and school in a variety of capacities (i.e. guest reader, library helper, cafeteria helper, assist during Language Arts, etc.). Please reach out to Andrea Howard if you are interested in volunteering and your interests. She will work with you to match you to volunteer opportunities in our school.  All volunteers must review the WSES Volunteer Procedures and complete the agreement form before volunteering.
