Dear Charger families,
It has been a wonderful week of connecting with students and families at Chantilly. A few highlights:
- I enjoyed watching our Chantilly Boys Varsity Volleyball team victorious in a competitive match against Madison Monday night at South Lakes HS. Our Chargers won in 5 sets and it was clear throughout the competition that the team is committed to hard work and enjoys being together. It was great to see our team having fun in their inaugural season. Go Chargers!
- We had large turnouts for our "Paying for College" seminar and Common App work sessions earlier this week. Thank you to our College and Career Specialist, Maggie Rodriguez for hosting and supporting our students and their families.
- Our Admin Team and Student Services Department celebrated Chantilly's 10 College Board National Merit Semi-finalists, and 44 Commended Scholars (picture above), on Tuesday with a gathering and a sweet treat. We are so proud of the achievements of these outstanding students.
- The hallways of Chantilly have been transformed into an art gallery by Ms. Kennedy's Studio Art classes. Students have been collaborating to create murals showcasing texture and perspective using our hallway walls and colored tape (pictured below). The creativity on display is amazing.
- We are committed to fostering a school culture founded on collaboration and sense of belonging at Chantilly. This week our upper class peer mentors will connect with their class of 2028 mentees in 9th grade homerooms to share student led activities focused on strengthening student relationships. I was in awe of our 11th and 12th grade students' engagement with our mentor trainer and their commitment to their peers when I attended their opening session earlier this week.

October 31- Last Day of 1st Quarter
November 12 - Report cards available in ParentVue and StudentVUE
November 19 - Last day for student to drop a class without Withdraw Pass or Withdraw Fail showing on transcript

- Only registered 12th graders will take the Digital SAT.

High school academy courses will not be held on October 9, 2024, and all high school shuttles are canceled for the day. High school academy staff will support based school activities.
Fall 2024 SEL Screener
Students in grades 9-12 use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. These skills include achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success.
The screener measures student skills, strengths, and needs across the following topics:
- Self-Management & Responsible Decision Making
- Social Awareness & Relationship Skills
- Emotion Regulation
- Supportive Relationships
- Belonging
- Cultural Awareness & Action *grades 6-12 only
- Challenging Feelings
Chantilly HS students who were not opted out will complete the Fall Wellness Screener on October 17, 2024 during homeroom . We are anticipating families with SIS ParentVue accounts will see results in early December. Families without ParentVue accounts will receive results via USPS as they have in years past around this time. Once we have an updated timeline, we will provide communication via this weekly message. For more information, please visit this webpage.
Families who wish to opt their child out may do so by completing the opt-out form in the Annual Notice packet or SIS ParentVUE. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage or contact our front office.
Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health
Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:
- Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
- Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
- Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
- Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
- A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
- Alcohol or drug use.
- Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family.
- Thoughts of harming themselves or others.
If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Click here for staff contact information to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Find additional ways to support your child’s wellness.
If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis such as thoughts of harming themselves or others, please take action right away. Call 988, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health Emergency Services at 703-573-5679.
No-Cost Virtual Therapy for High School Students
Parents/caregivers no longer need to opt in their child to receive Hazel Health’s teletherapy services. This will make the referral process easier for families. Virtual therapy sessions are available to FCPS high school students at no cost to provide them with a safe space to address concerns such as:
- Mood/behavior changes, motivation, grief/loss
- Anxiety, worry, fears
- Social skills, bullying, peer and family relationships
- Academic stress
You may refer your child by calling 571-749-2940 or by contacting our school counselor, social worker, psychologist, or director of Student Services.
Visit the FCPS Teletherapy webpage for more information.
Make Sure Your Children Are Up-to-Date on Immunizations
Please make sure your child has all of their necessary immunizations. Remember, all students are required to be immunized against certain diseases to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of keeping children healthy!
Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school. You can check your child’s immunization compliance and submit immunization information by accessing SIS ParentVUE.
Please check with your family's health care provider to make sure your child is up to date on required immunizations for the 2024-25 school year. If your child needs a vaccine to complete their records, make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services. Be wise and immunize!
Sean listos, vacunense!
