We are so proud of our students for demonstrating our C.A.R.E.S. expectations and look forward to celebrating this accomplishment and the first two weeks of school with ice pops on Thursday!
To help plan for our school’s child care needs during the early release Mondays, please complete this form: https://forms.gle/4XSfVCSWgtwt4p9k7 for each of your children who are enrolled at Cub Run Elementary. We currently have 308 responses, and we need the form submitted for each Cubbie. The form covers the first two early release Mondays, scheduled for September 23, 2024, and October 28, 2024. If you have multiple children, you will need to submit multiple forms. If you have not already, please submit this form by September 3, 2024. Students requiring adult supervision due to hardship will be overseen by instructional assistants, school monitors, school staff, central office personnel, and/or volunteers. Afternoon Kiss and Ride/Car Riders
Families, please be sure that your KNR number is clearly displayed on your rearview mirror the entire time that you are in the school parking lot. It is important for management of our dismissal board that staff be able to see your KNR number clearly and easily as you both enter and leave the parking lot. If you are unable to hang your number from your rearview mirror, please contact the front office and we will get you a new one.
Please stay in your vehicle at all times. If your child needs help opening a car door, our staff is happy to help them from the sidewalk.
Walkers
If your child is a walker, please be sure you are staying on the sidewalks as you leave school grounds. Families should not be crossing through the parking lot while Kiss N Ride is active.
Notification of Testing
Below is notification of testing occurring in Fairfax County during the fall window.
The Virginia government requires assessments for the Virginia Literacy Act (VLA) and Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP)* in all schools. These assessments help state officials understand literacy and school readiness needs across Virginia. Additionally, the mathematics screener in grades 1-2 fulfills a Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) requirement. Test results also help teachers, school leaders, and parents know how to support each student’s learning and development. The Academic Screening, Growth, and Diagnostic Tests webpage
(https://www.fcps.edu/academic-screening-growth-and-diagnostic-tests) provides more information on these tests.

* In addition to the EMAS, VKRP also requires PreK-K teachers to observe a student’s self-regulation and social skills using the Child Behavior Rating Scale (CBRS).
Teachers assess all PreK-2 students with the VALLSS in fall, winter, and spring. Grade PreK-K EMAS tests are given in fall and spring only. In grades 1-2, all students take the iReady Math test in fall and spring, but only students whose fall score is below benchmark will retest in winter. Tests are delivered within the classroom instructional block. Teachers set specific testing dates for each class. General timing for required screening is available on the Grade Level Tests webpage
Based on academic screening results, some students may require a reading plan or math intervention plan. Some students may need additional diagnostic tests to help teachers determine specific areas for support. If you have questions about academic screening, growth, or diagnostic tests, please contact your student’s teacher or the school's test coordinator.
The Virginia Literacy Act (VLA) and Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) require schools to provide reading and mathematics screening tests for all students in grades 3-6. These assessments also fulfill a requirement for reading and mathematics growth assessments under the Virginia Assessment Program (VAP). Test results help families and teachers know how to support each student’s learning and development. The Academic Screening, Growth, and Diagnostic Tests webpage provides more information on these tests.
- iReady Math - all students scheduled to take the spring Standards of Learning (SOL)
- iReady Reading - all students scheduled to take the spring SOL
- Virginia Language and Literacy Screening System (VALLSS) - only select grade 3 students
Elementary teachers assess all grade 3-6 students with iReady Math and iReady Reading in fall, winter, and spring. Tests are delivered within the classroom instructional block. Teachers set specific testing dates for each class. General timing for required screening and growth tests is available on the Grade Level Tests webpage.
Based on academic screening results, some students may require a reading plan or math intervention plan. Some students may require additional diagnostic tests to help teachers determine specific areas for support. If you have questions about academic screening, growth, or diagnostic tests, please contact your student’s teacher or the school's test coordinator.

Action Needed: Student Device Responsible Use Guidelines
Each family received a “Student Device Responsible Use Guidelines” handout in their Welcome Walk folder last week. This was a bright yellow sheet of paper. This document is separate from the Digital Resource Consent that is signed through SIS. Students must return this signed yellow paper to their teachers before they are issued a device here at school. If you need another copy of the Device Responsible Use Guidelines, please reach out to your child’s teacher for another copy.
Wednesday Folders
Please read over the contents of the folder carefully. Inside you will find valuable information and forms which need to be returned to school. Our Wednesday Folder is our communication link with you in addition to this message. The Wednesday Folder is a white envelope that students will take home every Wednesday. In the envelope you will find fliers, schoolwork samples and other school communications. Parents are asked to remove and read the contents, sign the front of the envelope, and help students remember to return it to school the next day.

Lightspeed Parent Report on Child's Device Activity
FCPS has tools to help parents know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided at no cost to families by Lightspeed, the school division’s internet content filtering service.
Parents may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites their child visited. The report also offers parents the ability to sign up for free access to the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.
Learn more about Lightspeed Parent Reports.
Attendance Matters!
Please take a moment to review the FCPS calendar and plan accordingly. Your child's attendance is vital for their academic progress.
While we understand the importance of family vacations, we kindly request that you plan your trips around our school schedule. Thank you for your cooperation!
Any student absent for 18 or more days will be considered chronically absent. Read more about FCPS Attendance expectations here.

Action Needed: Limited Early Release Mondays
The Early Release Mondays planned throughout the school year for elementary schools are essential to allow educators time for planning and professional development. Students will be dismissed 3 hours early seven times throughout the school year and are encouraged to return home via their normal route. However, we understand there may be a childcare hardship because of the early release Mondays for many of our families. To resolve these concerns, student supervision will be available for families who need it.
The following dates are planned for Early Release Mondays throughout the school year:
- September 23, October 28, December 9, February 24, March 17, April 28 and May 19
To help plan for our school’s child care needs during the early release Mondays, please complete this form: https://forms.gle/4XSfVCSWgtwt4p9k7 for each of your children who are enrolled at Cub Run Elementary. The form covers the first two early release Mondays, scheduled for September 23, 2024 and October 28, 2024. If you have multiple children, you will need to submit multiple forms. Staff will confirm the after school supervision plan for each student. Please submit this form by September 3, 2024.
For additional information, FCPS has created this webpage that provides further detail about the early release Mondays.
Action Item: Student Online Verification/Update
The 2024-25 Online Verification/Update (OVU) packet is available in ParentVUE. The OVU packet allows the enrolling parent to electronically update phone numbers, emergency contacts, health conditions, and new immunizations dates for their students via ParentVUE. For detailed information on how to use the OVU system, please click here. Every family will need to verify that their information is correct by September 3rd.
Action Item: Student Consent Forms
Student consent forms currently available on ParentVue will be moved to the Parent Digital Consent System (PDC). Families can log into the PDC using their ParentVue credentials to complete consent forms assigned to their child. If you have a new ParentVue account, you must wait 24 hours after it is created to use the PDC.
Forms available include:
- School Counseling Opt-out

- Family Life Education Opt-out
