Dear Bailey’s ES Families,
We want to take a moment to celebrate the great start we had last week! Seeing our hallways filled with the energy and excitement of our students returning to their classrooms has been truly heartwarming. The week was filled with reconnecting, settling into new routines, and beginning our journey toward another year of growth and learning. Our first week of school could not have gone so well without the hard work and dedication of our teachers, staff, and, of course, your support at home. It’s clear that we’re all ready to make this school year one of our best yet!
As we look ahead to the second week of school, we want to remind everyone of a few important things:
-
Communication: If you haven’t done so already, please make sure we have your current email address and phone number, so you don’t miss any important updates or information.
-
Safety First: We are committed to maintaining a safe and welcoming environment. Please review our drop-off and pick-up procedures to ensure everything runs smoothly.
-
Back to School Night: Mark your calendars for Back to School Night on September 11th. Teachers will share information about the grade level curriculum, schoolwide expectations and other grade level events they have planned for the school year.
Thank you again for your continued support and for being a part of the Bailey’s Elementary community! We hope you have a fantastic week!
Satonya Dews, Principal
Jillian Bell, Assistant Principal
Tracey Brown Rice, Assistant Principal

Transportation Patience and Safety
Thank you for your patience as we all get used to new routines this school year. We appreciate our families following Kiss and Ride procedures and being patient while waiting for your children’s buses.
If a student’s bus is delayed, parents may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report. Email messages will be sent to announce significant bus delays. Contact the Transportation Office at 703-446-2050 with any additional questions. For any concerns after 5:30 p.m., contact Safety and Security at 571-423-2000.
To make sure you receive email messages about bus delays, update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE.

Kiss and Ride
We know that many of our families will use Kiss & Ride for both arrival and dismissal. We appreciate your patience as our staff works to help your children each morning and afternoon. Here are a few tips that can make things run smoothly:
- Staff members will greet students in the “Kiss and Ride” line starting at 8:50 a.m. and ending at 9:00 a.m.
- Have your child sit on the right-hand passenger side and always exit on the right. Please practice this routine with your child.
- After 9:00 a.m., parents must park and walk students inside the building to the office for a tardy pass.
- Kiss and Ride pick-up runs from 3:35 p.m. to 3:55 p.m. Anyone picking up after 3:55 p.m. will need to go to the office to pick up students. They need to be listed on the emergency care card and have a valid ID.
- Parents should stay in their cars during arrival and dismissal. There will be plenty of adults available to help children get in and out of cars.
During the first week of school, we keep Kiss and Ride open later to support families as they adjust to the Kiss and Ride routines. We appreciate your patience as we work out the kinks.

Early Release Mondays
Providing an excellent education to all students and meeting individual student needs requires appropriate planning time for teachers. This means teachers need a dedicated block of time to prepare lessons, participate in professional development and training, and collaborate with peers.
With that in mind, FCPS has developed a divisionwide plan for seven three-hour early release days (Mondays) for elementary students in the 2024-25 school year. Different elementary schools have different Early Release Monday dates.
Bailey’s ES will have seven 3-hour early release days on the dates listed below. Dismissal on these dates will begin at 12:45 p.m
- September 16
- October 21
- November 18
- February 10
- March 10
- April 21
- May 12
To help plan for our school’s child care needs during the early release Mondays, please complete this form: https://forms.gle/qMureCQicM2R4zKm6 for each of your children who are enrolled at Bailey’s.
The form covers the first two early release Mondays, scheduled for September 16, 2024 and October 21, 2024. If you have multiple children, you will need to submit multiple forms. Staff will confirm the after school supervision plan for each student. This form was also sent to the email address we have on file. Please complete the form by Friday, August 30th.
Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) Program
As we prepare for the upcoming school year at Bailey’s, we will continue to be a Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) school. Through this program, all students at Bailey’s ES are eligible to receive no-cost breakfast and lunch throughout the school year, regardless of their family's income.
More CEP Information:
- CEP is a USDA program that ensures every student at Bailey’s is provided a nutritious meal for breakfast and lunch each day at no charge.
- Meal service is the same at CEP schools and non-CEP schools; a la carte items are still offered.
- Only breakfast and lunch meals provided through the CEP program will be free. A la carte items such as milk, juice, or water and second entrees will be available for purchase Prices for a la carte items can be found here.

FCPS 2023-2030 Strategic Plan
✨ Our Commitment to Excellence, Equity, and Opportunity for Each and Every Student
As we begin a new school year, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid reminds us of the goals of FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which guides us in delivering excellence, equity, and opportunity for each and every one of our students. Watch Dr. Reid’s message.
Opt-Out Annual Notice
Fairfax County Public Schools wants all parents and caregivers to understand its policies regarding surveys, records, curriculum, privacy, and related rights.
In its Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms (Annual Notice), FCPS provides explanations of the rights listed above as well as forms that may be used to exercise opt-out choices. Two versions of the Annual Notice are available: a grades K-8 version and a grades 9-12 version. Parents/caregivers with children at different grade levels should read each applicable version of the Annual Notice, because the notices and opt-out rights vary depending on the student’s grade level.

Bookmark the School Year Calendar
Be sure to bookmark the FCPS school year calendar to keep track of school holidays, breaks, and observances:
- Days marked with a blue “H” are student holidays. Schools are closed on these days.
- Days marked with an orange “O” are religious and cultural observance days (or evenings if only half marked). There is school on these days, but certain events that cannot be made up may not be scheduled on these days.
- Days marked in pink are holidays for students, but working days for teachers and staff.
Note: Some holidays and observances, such as Eid al-Fitr, may shift and the calendar may be adjusted.
Counselor's Corner
Second Step Curriculum- Schoolwide Social Emotional Learning
We want your child to be as successful as possible at school. Success in school is not just about reading and math. It is also about knowing how to learn and how to get along with others. We will be using the Second Step program in your child’s classroom to teach these critical skills. New lessons will be taught every Tuesday, starting on September 10th.
The Second Step program teaches skills in the following four areas:
- Skills for Learning: Students gain skills to help themselves learn, including how to focus their attention, listen carefully, use self-talk to stay on task, and be assertive when asking for help with schoolwork.
- Empathy: Students learn to identify and understand their own and others’ feelings. Students also learn how to take another’s perspective and how to show compassion.
- Emotion Management: Students learn specific skills for calming down when experiencing strong feelings, such as anxiety or anger.
- Problem Solving: Students learn a process for solving problems with others in a positive way.
Your child will be learning a lot this year—and he or she will need your help! Throughout the year, your child’s teacher will be sending you a Talking Points text with Home Links that go with several of the Second Step lessons. Home Links are simple, fun activities for you and your child to complete together. They are a great way for you to understand what your child is learning and for your child to show you what he or she knows. You do not need to complete the activities and return the Home Links page to school.
Thank you for supporting your child in learning the skills that lead to success in school and in life.
Make sure to join www.secondstep.org with the activation key SSPK FAMI LY70 (Kindergarten); SSP1 FAMI LY71 (1st Grade), and SSP2 FAMI LY72 (2nd Grade), to watch videos about the Second Step program and get information about what your student is learning.
