Welcome back Cubbies!  Some of our "first day of school" pictures!

Cub Run News

Cubbie Corner

Dear Cub Run Families and Friends,

We have had an exciting and busy first week of school! It has been amazing to have our Cubbies back in school and to see their engagement and smiles throughout the day. Our Cubbies have been reconnecting with old friends and making new friends. Our staff has been focused on getting to know our students, their strengths, and building a strong community of learners. We want each of our students to feel connected and to have a sense of belonging within their classroom and at Cub Run.

Our school community has also been focused on our school-wide C.A.R.E.S. expectations. You can ask your student what C.A.R.E.S. means and what it looks like in our hallways, bathrooms, at recess, in our cafeteria. The focus on our expectations and routines will support a safe, supportive, and positive learning environment for our students throughout the year.

We look forward to partnering with each of you this school year! Please consider joining our PTA and reaching out to us as questions arise. It is going to be an exceptional year, Go Cubbies!

Warm regards,

Melissa Miller & Nausheen Haider

Cubbie News

Welcome to our New Cub Run Staff!

chap

We are excited to welcome Ashley Chapman to Cub Run this year as our new librarian! Mrs. Chapman has been working in education for 20 years; prior to starting here at Cub Run she was the librarian at Island Creek Elementary School. Chapman is a Fairfax County native; after graduating high school, she went on to be a student at James Madison University, George Mason University, and Longwood University. When she’s not here at Cub Run, Mrs. Chapman loves spending time outside with her family- walking, swimming, and lounging at the beach or pool with a good book.

We are excited to welcome Angelique Cooper to Cub Run this year as our new instructional coach. This is Mrs. Cooper’s 15th year working in education, starting her teaching career in Gwinnett County, Georgia. After moving to Northern Virginia, she was an English teacher at Stone Middle School for 8 years before moving on to be an instructional coach at Bonnie Brae Elementary School in Burke. She spent three years in her position at Bonnie Brae before joining us here at Cub Run. Outside of school, Mrs. Cooper enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, trying new foods and experiences, and spending time near the ocean.

jack

We are excited to welcome Michelle Jackson to our counseling team here at Cub Run! Ms. Jackson is in her tenth year of being a school counselor and splits her time between Cub Run and Centre Ridge. She received her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Alabama (Roll Tide!) and went on to complete the Counseling and Development program at George Mason. During her free time, Ms. Jackson enjoys spending time with family, traveling, watching football, and attending group workout classes. She’s looking forward to a great year at Cub Run!

musi

We are excited to welcome Katie Musitani to our ESOL team here at Cub Run! Mrs. Musitani has been a teacher for 17 years and will be splitting her time this year with both Cub Run students and Greenbriar West students. She is originally from the beautiful Northwest, but has found her place here in the classrooms of Fairfax County. She has four children of her own, as well as one grandchild! We look forward to having Mrs. Musitani here at Cub Run!

Action Needed: Student Device Responsible Use Guidelines

Each family received a “Student Device Responsible Use Guidelines” handout in their Welcome Walk folder last week. This was a bright yellow sheet of paper. This document is separate from the Digital Resource Consent that is signed through SIS. Students must return this signed yellow paper to their teachers before they are issued a device here at school. If you need another copy of the Device Responsible Use Guidelines, please reach out to your child’s teacher for another copy.

Breakfast Procedures

In an effort to support our students and learning environments, we have implemented an adjustment to our breakfast procedures. Students who need to eat breakfast, will go to the cafeteria directly when arriving at school. Our Cubbies will eat breakfast in the cafeteria and then head to class. Our doors open at 8:30am for students to start coming in for breakfast.

Birthday Celebrations

In an effort to foster healthy food choices and avoid possible allergens in the classroom, food items will not be permitted for birthdays. If you would like to send in a small non-food item for all students in the class, you could consider erasers, stickers or birthday pencils on your child’s special day. These items would be handed out at the end of our instructional day. You could also consider donating a book to the classroom library.

We would like to remind families that parents are under no obligation to send in anything for birthdays. Our teachers will recognize birthdays in class and they are celebrated on our Morning News as well. We appreciate your support.

Back to School Night-September 18

Please join us for Back to School Night on Wednesday, September 18. This evening, our teachers will be presenting sessions, you can meet our specialists, and hear important FCPS information on what to expect this school year. We look forward to seeing you!

6:00-6:40PM - Session 1 & Welcome Videos

6:00-7:15PM - Specialists available in library

6:50-7:30PM - Session 2 & Welcome Videos

Safety Drills During the School Year

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for Cub Run and FCPS. Each school has an emergency preparedness plan to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Schools are required by state law to practice emergency drills, including lockdown drills, each year. Schools are also required to notify parents and guardians at least 24 hours before a school conducts a lockdown drill. However, schools are not required to give the specific date and time of the drill in advance.

By law, the first lockdown drill of the school year must take place within the first 20 days of school. Preschool and kindergarten students are exempt from practicing the first lockdown drill.

Your child may come home and talk about their experience during drills. We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Please review these frequently asked questions to support your students before and after school lockdown drills.

Attendance Matters!

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Students who attend 90% or more of the school year are more likely to graduate from high school on time.
  • Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
  • Missing 10 percent (or about 2 days per month) can make it harder to learn to read.
  • Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
  • Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day every few weeks.
  • Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.
  • Absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with school work, dealing with peer conflicts or facing some other potentially serious difficulty, and help is available.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

  • Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
  • Find out what day school starts and make sure your child has the required shots.
  • Introduce your child to her teachers and classmates before school starts to help her transition.
  • Don’t let your child stay home unless they are truly sick. Keep in mind complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.
  • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make her feel comfortable and excited about learning.
  • Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
  • Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.

Reminders

Action Needed: Limited Early Release Mondays

The Early Release Mondays planned throughout the school year for elementary schools are essential to allow educators time for planning and professional development.  Students will be dismissed 3 hours early seven times throughout the school year and are encouraged to return home via their normal route.  However, we understand there may be a childcare hardship because of the early release Mondays for many of our families.  To resolve these concerns, student supervision will be available for families who need it.

The following dates are planned for Early Release Mondays throughout the school year:

  • September 23, October 28, November 25, February 24, March 17, April 28 and May 19

To help plan for our school’s child care needs during the early release Mondays, please complete this form: https://forms.gle/4XSfVCSWgtwt4p9k7 for each of your children who are enrolled at Cub Run Elementary. The form covers the first two early release Mondays, scheduled for September 23, 2024 and October 28, 2024. If you have multiple children, you will need to submit multiple forms. Staff will confirm the after school supervision plan for each student. Please submit this form by August 26, 2024.

For additional information, FCPS has created this webpage that provides further detail about the early release Mondays.

Action Item: Student Online Verification/Update

The 2024-25 Online Verification/Update (OVU) packet is available in ParentVUE. The OVU packet allows the enrolling parent to electronically update phone numbers, emergency contacts, health conditions, and new immunizations dates for their students via ParentVUE.  For detailed information on how to use the OVU system, please click hereEvery family will need to verify that their information is correct by September 3rd.

Action Item: Student Consent Forms

Student consent forms currently available on ParentVue will be moved to the Parent Digital Consent System (PDC). Families can log into the PDC using their ParentVue credentials to complete consent forms assigned to their child.  If you have a new ParentVue account, you must wait 24 hours after it is created to use the PDC.

Forms available include:

  • School Counseling Opt-out
  • Digital Resources Consent
  • SEL Screener Opt-Out
  • Family Life Education Opt-out
  • SOL Retest Permission
  • Objection to Release of Directory Information to the Public
  • Objection to Release of Information to Outside Organizations

New Feature in ParentVUE: Report Full-Day Absences

Starting on the first day of school, Monday, August 19, parents/caregivers can submit full-day absences through FCPS’ SIS ParentVUE platform. This will make reporting and tracking absences easier for our school.

Parents/caregivers may report absences by using ParentVUE or by contacting the front office. Please find important details below:

  • How to Use ParentVUE: Log in to your ParentVUE account and select “Report Absence.”
  • More Ways to Report: Use our attendance line at 703-633-7575 or email cubrunelem.attendance@fcps.edu for absences longer than two days, late arrivals, and early dismissals.
  • Where to Get Help: Visit FCPS’ Attendance Reporting webpage for step-by-step instructions.

If you need to set up a ParentVUE account or have questions, please contact our front office at 703-633-7500. They will provide you with an “activation key” and instructions to create a ParentVUE account.

CARES

Update your Child's Immunization and Records

Please check with your healthcare provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up-to-date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia. Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.

You can check your child’s immunization compliance and submit their immunization record in SIS ParentVUE. Records may also be delivered to a school’s front office.

If your child needs a vaccine, please make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services. If needed, families may also provide other immunization documentation including a healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption or a notarized Religious Exemption Form.

Find more information on immunizations on the FCPS website.
