A Message from Principal Goldstein

Sam Goldstein

Dear Fairview Families,

What a fantastic start to the school year! The energy and excitement in our halls have been truly inspiring. We’re thrilled to have everyone back and eager to learn.

As we settle into the school routine, our teachers are focused on creating a positive and supportive classroom environment. They’ll be sharing expectations and diving deep into their curriculum. This strong foundation will help every student feel confident and engaged.

Thank you for choosing Fairview for your child’s education. We’re excited about the year ahead and all the amazing things we’ll accomplish together!

We hope to see you at Back to School Night next week.

Sincerely,

Samantha Goldstein

Literacy Updates

The Virginia Literacy Act (VLA) passed in 2022, set expectations that all students in Virginia receive core ELA literacy instruction grounded in scientifically-based reading research (SBRR) and evidence-based literacy instruction (EBLI).This week, Fairview teachers started using the new FCPS curriculum called Benchmark.

Benchmark Advance 2022 is a content-based literacy program that provides a cohesive structure for the development of literacy skills and content knowledge. Benchmark Advance’s instructional framework is built around knowledge strands that focus on one topic which runs across all grade levels. This allows students to build knowledge, language, and vocabulary across their entire elementary career. Topics of study are from social studies, science, and language arts.

We will continue to share information regularly as we implement this new program.

Pick up Patrol (Dismissal)

This school year we will continue using PickUp Patrol  to help us track dismissals. PickUp Patrol (PUP) has saved us a great deal of time in the office, reduced classroom interruptions and provides you with a convenient way to make changes to your child’s dismissal plans.

Most importantly, continuing to use it will help us ensure that our students are safely dismissed to their correct after-school destinations.

You should have received an email this week explaining how to log back into your account, or how to create a new one. If you are registered, please look at your child's default dismissal plan to ensure that it is accurate. If you are not registered, please follow the steps outlined in the email and create a default dismissal plan for your child.

Bus

Your ParentVUE account will show your child’s bus route number, the stop location, and estimated pick-up and drop-off times. With your ParentVUE account, you can activate the Here Comes the Bus app for tracking your child’s bus. You will need the FCPS school district code of 28982.

You should arrive at your bus stop ten minutes before your scheduled pick-up time since schedules may vary slightly from day to day.

Kiss and Ride

When using Kiss & Ride, you must enter from Burke Centre Parkway and use Door 2.

Walkers

Walkers enter at the playground, Door 5. All kindergarten students must be met at the door by the parent/guardian.

Parent Toolkit- Parent Action Required

The following are some yearly action items for all parents to complete. Items with an asterisk (*) are time sensitive and require parent action.

To help plan for our school’s childcare needs during the early release Mondays, please complete this form: https://forms.gle/FU2TgKfthzUcE9RG7 for each of your children who are enrolled at Fairview Elementary. The form covers the first two early release Mondays, scheduled for September 23, 2024 and October 28, 2024. If you have multiple children, you will need to submit multiple forms. Staff will confirm the after school supervision plan for each student.

A Few Notes...

Forgotten Items:

To minimize classroom disruptions, we will no longer be making calls to notify students when an item is dropped off at the office.

If your child forgets their water bottle, lunch, jacket, homework, etc., we encourage you to email their teacher to inform them of the drop-off. Please be aware that teachers may not see emails immediately, as they are focused on teaching throughout the day.

To ensure a smooth process, kindly label all items with your child's name and teacher.

Thank you for your cooperation and support.

Extra Clothes:

To help your child stay comfortable throughout the day, we recommend placing an extra set of clothing in their backpack. We do not have extra clothing items available in the office, and students often need a change of clothes after accidents, spills, or unexpected situations like wet playgrounds or split pants.

Having extra clothes on hand will save you a trip and ensure your child is prepared for any surprises.

Understanding the SIS Attendance Codes:

  • EXC-Excused Absence; Examples: student illness, death in the family, medical procedure, injury, temporary student or family hardship, etc.
  • UNX-Unexcused Absence; Absences in which student whereabouts are unknown
  • UNL-Unexcused Locally Absence; Absences where student whereabouts are known or supported by the parent, but administration or local policy still deems the absence unexcused
Examples: student shopping with parent; student and family away for vacation; student participating in other non-school activities during school hours.
  • EXT-Excused Tardy; Student was not present in their classroom at the start of the school day (9:10), but has a valid reason for being late
  • UNT-Unexcused Tardy; Student was not present in their classroom at the start of the school day (9:10) for an acceptable reason
  • REL-Religious Holiday; Absence for religious holiday or cultural observance -parent notification required

🔍 Lightspeed Parent Report on Child’s Device Activity

FCPS has tools to help parents know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided at no cost to families by Lightspeed, the school division’s internet content filtering service.

Parents may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites their child visited. The report also offers parents the ability to sign up for free access to the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.

Learn more about Lightspeed Parent Reports.

Update Your Child’s Immunizations and Records

Please check with your healthcare provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up-to-date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia. Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.

You can check your child’s immunization compliance and submit their immunization record in SIS ParentVUE. Records may also be delivered to our school’s front office.

If your child needs a vaccine, please make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services. If needed, you may also provide other immunization documentation including a healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption or a notarized Religious Exemption Form.

Find more information on immunizations on the FCPS website.
