RVES News and Notes - August 23

August 23 - News and Notes!

Rolling Valley Families,

We had an amazing first week of school! It was wonderful to see so many smiles, reconnect with friends who were missed over the summer, and make new ones. Our students have hit the ground running with instruction already underway, and our mornings have been filled with warm greetings and engaging morning meetings. We were also excited to welcome students from West Springfield High School, who came to play instruments for our students. Their visit was part of an effort to recruit students for our band and strings programs in grades 4-6.

As a reminder, there will be no school next Friday, September 30. We hope everyone has a fantastic weekend, and we look forward to seeing everyone back on Monday!

PLEASE VISIT our WEBSITE www.spartansports.net for more information and our game schedule.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS – We are excited to kick off our football season with our first home game on August 29th as the Spartans take on the Hayfield Hawks @ 7pm.

The theme for this FIRST home game is a WHITE OUT.

All elementary and middle school students need to be accompanied & supervised by an adult while at the game. High school students who get dropped off must plan to have their rides waiting for them at the conclusion of the game.

If you or your student plans to come, please take the time to discuss the relevant information below:

  • No backpacks or other bags will be allowed in the stadium.
  • No outside food or drinks are allowed. The concession stand will be open.
  • The purpose for students who attend our varsity football games is to watch the game, cheerleaders, band, and dance team.
  • We cheer for our team and not against our opponent. All cheers should be positive.
  • The gates to the stadium will open at 6:15pm.
  • All students need to leave immediately following the game.
  • Elementary & middle school students must always be supervised by an adult.
  • If you leave the game, you will not be able to re-enter the stadium.
  • Whistles, air horns and similar noisemakers are prohibited.

Our goal is to create a positive community event.  Any behaviors that take away from this goal may result in removal from the game.  LET’S GO SPARTANS!

DAILY ATTENDANCE (2024-25)

Monday-Friday

9:15 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Early-8:55 a.m.

Rolling Valley Elementary will supervise students starting at 8:55 a.m. in the cafeteria. To keep our students safe, walkers and car riders should arrive at school no earlier than 8:55 a.m. Students are dismissed to classrooms from the cafeteria at 9:10 a.m. Students who are walkers or car riders and who would like to eat breakfast, must arrive to the cafeteria at 8:55 so they have time to eat.

On Time-9:10 a.m.

Our first bell rings at 9:10 a.m. Students should be in their seats by the second bell at 9:15 a.m.

Absent or Tardy-9:16 a.m.

If your child is either going to be absent for the entire day or late for any reason, call the school attendance line at 703-923-2727 or use the email box before 9:00 a.m. The attendance line is available 24-7 for your message. If the school does not receive a call from a parent, the absence will be considered unexcused.

Family Trips - We encourage family trips during scheduled school holidays and breaks. We discourage such trips during the school year because these extended absences interrupt sequential learning in many subject areas. Students who have pre-planned vacations during the school year must complete a prearranged absence form https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/se291.pdf

Students will be marked as unexcused during these absences.

We must withdraw any student who is absent from school for 15 days or more from our enrollment. Upon the student’s return, a parent must officially enroll him or her in school.

Elementary School Cell Phone Policy

Phones must be silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day. Watches that serve a dual purpose (e.g., smart watch) may be worn; however, phone features (e.g., texting, internet, calls, etc.) are to be off when phone use is prohibited. Students are prohibited from using phones, tablets, and other mobile devices in restrooms and locker rooms, unless there is a medical necessity or emergency. With the approval of the principal or their designee, teachers may allow usage of cell phones for instructional activities where they are the most appropriate tool; however, one-to-one FCPS devices should meet most needs. Cell phones may be used on campus before and after school, only.

Immunizations

In Virginia, it's required by law for students to have certain immunizations to attend school. This is supported by guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Virginia Department of Health, and FCPS Regulation 2101.

Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.

You can check your child’s immunization compliance by accessing ParentVUE

Families of students with incomplete immunization records need to provide acceptable proof of immunization to their child's school as soon as possible. You can find the list of required immunizations on the General Registration Immunizations webpage.

If your child’s immunizations are incomplete, here's what you need to do:

  1. Get your child’s immunization record from one of these places:
  • Request immunization records for free through the Virginia Immunization Information System (VIIS).
  • If your child was immunized outside Virginia, get records from those states’ systems.
  • Request records from your healthcare provider. Some may charge for copies.
  • Submit your child’s immunization record to your child’s school.

Families should submit their child’s completed immunization records before September 30.

Please visit FCPS’ website for more information.
