Thoreau Matters

June 14, 2024

Dear Thoreau Families,

As we wave goodbye to the 2023-24 school year, we're filled with pride reflecting on the amazing moments we shared together. It's been a year of tremendous growth and achievements, and we couldn't have done it without your incredible support.

We kicked off the festivities with an unforgettable celebration for our eighth graders! A huge thank you to our dedicated PTA volunteers, especially Gayle Schlueter's leadership, for making it a roaring success. From capturing memories in the photo booth to witnessing hilarious dunk tank moments (brave teachers!), energetic dancing, and engaging field games, our soon-to-be high schoolers had a blast! The last day treated our amazing staff to a delightful ice cream surprise and a heartwarming visit from adorable alpacas and a baby goat, courtesy of the PTA. The smiles on their faces perfectly captured the joy of ending the year on a high note.

During our staff gathering on Thursday, we celebrated all the incredible achievements of this year. From exceeding expectations on SOL assessments and witnessing the impressive growth of our multilingual learners on their WIDA tests, to the inspiring Portrait of a Graduate presentations, our students truly soared.

As we move forward, we also extend a warm farewell and best wishes to the following staff members who are embarking on new adventures within FCPS or beyond:

  • Mersedeh Darvish - Math
  • Missy Walsh - Math
  • Lori Eshbaugh - Art
  • Yocelyn Polsgrove – Spanish
  • Darren Robinson- Science
  • Alex Duerre - Instructional Assistant

The Thoreau staff’s unwavering dedication and support for our students has once again been a hallmark of their success this year. Their tireless efforts are deeply appreciated. To our dedicated parents and families, your unwavering partnership has been instrumental. Wishing you all a safe, relaxing, and fun-filled summer vacation!

Sincerely,

Teresa Khuluki

Celebrating PRIDE Month

In the month of June, we recognize the resilience and determination of the many individuals who are fighting to live freely and authentically. We stand with those facing an ongoing struggle against discrimination and injustice. This Pride Month, we affirm our obligation to uphold the dignity of all people. Each individual in our school community should feel valued for who they are. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.
