Thoreau Matters

June 7, 2024

Dear Thoreau Families,

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the Thoreau PTA Board for all your hard work and dedication to making this year fabulous for our students, families, and staff! Melanie Nunez, Gayle Schlueter, Kim Bryant and Heather Kenney are truly appreciated!

Congratulations to the Thoreau Symphonic Band on being invited to perform at the Virginia Music Educators Association (VMEA) Conference in Norfolk, VA this November!  Thoreau is one of only two middle school bands selected from across the Commonwealth of Virginia. The band will perform in front of hundreds of music educators in a showcase of new music and a celebration of musical excellence. We are very proud!

The 8th Grade End of Year Celebration will be taking place at school on Tuesday, June 11th from 11:45am-2:15pm (7th/9th period). 8th grade students will be provided a fun and exciting opportunity to celebrate their time here at Thoreau with their fellow 8th grade classmates. The celebration will include various activity stations such as field games (soccer, football, hula hoop, corn hole, spikeball, etc.), ice cream station (ice cream will be provided for students by PTA), dunk tank (Thoreau approved staff are the only ones allowed in the dunk tank), food station with pre-selected pizza orders (provided for students by PTA), DJ & a photo booth station inside Gym 2. Students are still permitted to bring a lunch box and water bottle if desired. If there are allergy restrictions for students who cannot have pizza, please reach out to Gayle Schlueter from the PTA (gschlueter5@gmail.com). We are looking forward to ending the year strong and getting to celebrate our graduating 8th grade students!

It is the expectation that all students turn in their laptops no later than Monday during their PE class. Therefore, students should not bring a backpack or bookbag to school beginning Tuesday June 11th. Students are still permitted to bring a lunch box and water bottle if desired.

Lastly, this weekend, please look around your homes for overdue library books, track & field jerseys or maybe an extra laptop charger and place them in your child’s backpack for return on Monday. Speaking of returns - we would love to give back all the items in our Lost and Found to their rightful owners, please remind your child to take a look and take home items that belong to them.

Sincerely,

Teresa Khuluki

Principal

Celebrating PRIDE Month

In the month of June, we recognize the resilience and determination of the many individuals who are fighting to live freely and authentically. We stand with those facing an ongoing struggle against discrimination and injustice. This Pride Month, we affirm our obligation to uphold the dignity of all people. Each individual in our school community should feel valued for who they are. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.
