Thoreau Matters
May 24, 2024
Dear Thoreau families,
These last few weeks of school are jam-packed! We recently celebrated Ally Day and the Culture Club's end-of-year events – both a huge success showcasing the inclusive spirit of our Eagles and staff. Next week, SOL testing wraps up with retakes for eligible students. Meanwhile, classrooms are buzzing as students finalize their culminating projects and preparing for their Portrait of a Graduate Presentations of Learning on June 5. Thank you for keeping your child focused on a strong finish. Encourage them to show school spirit by supporting their classmates in the upcoming production of the classic musical, "42nd Street" (link to purchase tickets is below)!
Below is a link for a quick survey about the Middle School After-School Program. The survey should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete. The survey is an important component of the after-school program evaluation and is critical for future funding. The more responses we receive, the more valuable and reliable the data. The responses not only allow us to assess the impact of the after-school program, but they help drive program improvement and program quality. All survey responses are due by June 7, 2024. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WCQKSN8
As a reminder there is no school on Monday, May 27th. Please take a moment and pause to remember all those who Memorial Day commemorates and all that it means to so many families in our country.
Sincerely,
Teresa Khuluki
Principal
42nd Street Drama Show!
Come and see those dancing feet of Thoreau Middle School’s cast of 42nd Street. “42nd Street celebrates Broadway, Times Square and the magic of show biz with wit, humor and pizzazz. At the height of the Great Depression, aspiring chorus girl Peggy Sawyer comes to the big city from Allentown, PA, and soon lands her first big job in the ensemble of a glitzy new Broadway show. But just before opening night, the leading lady breaks her ankle. Will Peggy be able to step in and become a star?”

8th Grade Celebration
On June 11th, our 8th graders will celebrate the end of their middle school journey. During this action-packed event, students will have their choice of activities, food, and refreshments courtesy of our PTA. Our goal is for all students to attend this event. However, guidelines have been established to encourage all students to work their hardest to exemplify our RISE principals of Respect, Integrity, Service and Engagement during these final weeks of the school year. As such, students are expected and will be supported in meeting expectations, including:
- No more than 3 unexcused tardies to class during the school day (this excludes arrival to school)
- No more than 3 violations of the away for the day policy which results in a discipline referral
- No in or out of school suspensions as a result of a serious SR&R violation
- Completion of class assignments, projects and assessments
All students will be provided with multiple opportunities to complete missed work assignments and/or retest during Eagle Time or afterschool. The parents/guardians of any student who becomes at risk of losing the privilege of attending the end of the year celebration will be contacted. Our goal is for all 8th graders to attend the end of the year celebration and we will partner with families to provide students multiple opportunities to ensure they can attend. We look forward to a wonderful day celebrating our 8th graders before they move on to high school!
Upcoming Dates:
Monday, May 27 - NO SCHOOL - Memorial Day
Wednesday, June 12 - Last Day of School! Early Release!
Memorial Day
Throughout the year, FCPS has the opportunity to honor our military families through meaningful observances and holidays.
Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, is a solemn day with the distinct purpose to honor brave service members who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the nation’s military. This day brings us together as we honor those who gave their lives in defense of our nation’s freedom. It is a time to express gratitude for the bravery, dedication, and patriotism of our fallen heroes. As we honor the fallen, the day also serves as a reminder of the ongoing commitment to support all our military families.
Let us pause to remember and honor these service members for their ultimate sacrifice, ensuring their legacy is never forgotten.
