Mustang Memo 5.24.24

wellness week

Note from Dr. Sheers

Next week, we celebrate Wellness Awareness Week at WSES, where we celebrate the importance of health and well-being for our elementary school students! From May 27 - May 31, we’ll explore the essential elements of a healthy lifestyle, focusing on physical fitness, balanced nutrition, mental well-being, and overall healthy habits. This special week is designed to educate, inspire, and empower our young learners to make positive choices for a lifetime of wellness.

Why We Celebrate Wellness Week:

  • Promoting Physical Health: Engaging in regular exercise and understanding the benefits of staying active.
  • Encouraging Healthy Eating: Learning about balanced nutrition and making smart food choices.
  • Supporting Mental Well-Being: Practicing mindfulness, gratitude, and positive thinking to enhance emotional health.
  • Building Lifelong Habits: Instilling healthy routines and habits that students can carry into adulthood.

Join us in celebrating the importance of taking care of ourselves and doing good for others.

If your child is interested in joining the choir for the 2024-25 school year, here are some important details:

  2. Performances: There will be two after-school concert performances (dates TBD). Additional performance opportunities may arise, but participation in these will be voluntary.

Join Band & Strings for Next Year!

Join the Band and Strings Program at West Springfield Elementary!
Students in grades 4-6 at West Springfield Elementary School (WSES) have the exciting opportunity to start or continue learning an instrument. Fourth graders can choose strings, while fifth and sixth graders can opt for either band or strings. Instrument classes are held once a week without interfering with other instructional time. Students who do not participate in Band/Strings will take a third general music class.

Sign-Up: After your student chooses their preferred instrument, please sign up HERE

Who Can Join:

Important Information

Parent Volunteer Breakfast
We welcome our parent volunteers to join us on June 7th at 8:15 am in the cafeteria for a community breakfast. Please RSVP by June 1st.

Class Placements
Due to a significant increase in enrollment changes over the summer, we will no longer be able to announce class placements at the end of the school year. Instead, class placements will be communicated on Wednesday, August 14th.

Sensory Garden Plant Sign Up
Our 6th grade students have been working on creating a sensory garden in the unused courtyard opposite of the 1st grade classrooms. They've designed a model using various software and have grown herbs in three hydroponic gardens, ready for transplant. They've also prepared a list of mostly native perennials to plant. We're now ready to start planting and need help from the WSES community. While we've received a grant for garden beds and soil, we need to provide our own plants. Please see the Sign-up Genius link below to contribute to our Sensory Garden.

Thank you, in advance, for your generosity! Amy Stevenson on behalf of 6C and the Green Team

Medication Pick Up
Medication stored in the school health room must be picked up by student dismissal on the last day of school to avoid destruction.

  • Parents or guardians must collect medications; they cannot be sent home with students.
  • High school students may transport over-the-counter medications with parental permission.
  • For summer programs by Fairfax County Public Schools, existing medication authorization forms can be used, but medication must be picked up on the last day of school and delivered to the summer learning site on the program's first day.

Staff Moving
As we approach this time of year, we have some of our staff members moving out of the area. While we are saddened to see them leave, we are also excited for the opportunities and new beginnings that await them and any school is lucky to have them! Please join me in wishing the following staff all the best as they leave Virginia: Katie Jacobs, moving to Florida; Taylor Taylor, moving to Texas; and, Erika Emling, moving to Pennsylvania. We also congratulate Rod Harbin, who accepted a STEAM position at Homes Middle School, Chelsea Wasson and who accepted an MTSS Coach position at Lynbrook Elementary.

Family Ambassadors Wanted
In pursuit of this goal, we are seeking Family Ambassadors.  The Family Ambassadors will welcome new families in their chosen grade level and offer support as they familiarize themselves with WSES and their grade level. If you're interested on becoming a Family Ambassador, kindly fill out this form. An informational meeting will be held in the Fall.
