Flint Hill Updates

Good Afternoon Flint Hill Families,

Students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade started their SOL assessments this week. Next week will continue their SOL assessments including 6th graders. Please be sure to check the testing schedule in the message below and try to avoid absences on testing days.

Many of our classes and students have been hard at work on outdoor learning projects. Several classes spent time with Mrs. Chang in our outdoor garden beds planting, weeding and studying herbs and flowers. We look forward to seeing their learning grow!

This week, we will also begin collecting input from families about class placements for the upcoming year. Please do consider sharing your input with us as we prepare to build classes for the 24-25 school year. While we cannot accommodate requests for specific teachers, your input about your child's learning needs is helpful and appreciated.

Lastly, I hope you will join us this evening from 5:00 - 7:00 pm for the annual FHES Art Show! Almost 1,300 works of student art will be on display and it is a great opportunity to see the creative work of all of our Falcons on display!

Kindly,

Mr. Montaquila, Principal

Mr. Baker, Assistant Principal

Class Placement Input Opportunity (Due by May 16th)

summer school

To help us prepare for the upcoming school year, we are seeking parent/family input to build class lists for the 24-25 school year. Please take a moment to complete the optional input form below.

Sharing input about your students' areas of strength, need and interest will help our staff build balanced, effective classes that meet student needs. Also, sharing other circumstances that may be unique to your student can also be considered.

Please do not share requests for specific teachers and placement with specific students. In building class lists for over 600 students, it is not possible to meet all requests. Feedback that includes requests for specific teachers will not be included in our review.

1.) Please describe your child's strengths and areas of need.

2.) Are there any extenuating circumstances or factors that may influence our decision regarding placement for the 2024-2025 school year?

Please provide all input through the link below (Deadline: May 16th). Emailed comments will not be considered.

Attendance: Students Are Learning Every Day

Attendance2

As you plan upcoming trips and other family events, please remember the importance of sending your child to school every day. Review the FCPS School Year Calendar and try to plan any time away during long breaks from school.

Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent (missing 18 days or more) in kindergarten and first grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade.

What is an unexcused absence?

An unexcused absence is one for which the parent or guardian does not have prior knowledge, consent, and/or legitimate reason. Examples of reasons that are not justified and will result in an unexcused absence include: family and/or student vacations, child care situations, non-school-related activities, missed school bus, ect...

Unexcused absences cannot be exempted from automatic notifications from FCPS and FHES communications.

What is an excused absence?

An excused absence is one for which parents or guardians have prior knowledge, consent, and/or legitimate reason. Legitimate reasons may include: illness of the student, death in the family, doctor or dental appointment, observance of a religious holiday, ect...

Parents or guardians and students are encouraged to prearrange excused absences when possible.

Read more about how families can help form good attendance habits.
