From the Principal’s Pen

Dear Laurel Hill Families,

We have had a great week celebrating Autism Acceptance month!  Students are gaining a greater understanding of characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder and appreciation for all they bring to our school community.  A picture of the kindness wall can be seen below.

All students in grade 3-6 are taking our Standards of Learning assessments beginning in May.  The calendar of dates is below.  We ask that parents please avoid absences and tardies on these days.  You can help set your student up for success by going to bed early the night before the test and eating a protein filled breakfast.  Please remember to have students charge their laptops!

We will be hosting a virtual parent coffee on May 1 at 10 am at this link.  We will have our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher present to share how we are increasing rigor for ALL students.  This is also a great time to ask any questions you might have of the administration, parent liaison or PTA.

Please join us for Chipotle Dine Out night on May 1 from 4-8 pm.  You can order online and use code M2B97QP or tell them you are with Laurel Hill in the restaurant.  Our school will receive 25% of sales!   As a reminder, Friday, May 3 is a teacher workday and there will be no school for students.  Happy Friday eve!

Sincerely,

Janice Dalton, Principal

Addison Smith, Assistant Principal

Thmeaka Traylor, Assistant Principal

LHES News:

National Arab American Heritage Month

FCPS is proud to celebrate National Arab American Heritage Month in April. This special month provides an opportunity to recognize the history and valuable contributions of Arab Americans. Arab Americans have ancestry in one of the world’s 22 Arab nations, which are located from northern Africa through western Asia. The people of these nations are ethnically, politically, and religiously diverse but share a common cultural and linguistic heritage. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.

SEL Screener Results

FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener during March, providing updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Get more information about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s [teacher or counselor].
