Dear Charger Families,
I don't know about you, but for me, it feels like the school year is flying by! Spring is here and today marks the end of the third grading quarter, which means we have just about 9 weeks left of the 23-24 school year. There are many great things to come, including celebrating our class of 2024 graduation later this spring.
This week we recognized student appreciation week with spirit days and lunch time games. Our Chargers are our "WHY" for our work and our staff appreciates the unique gifts each student brings to the Chantilly community. Thank you for sharing them with us!
As we transition to the last quarter of the year, we will be sharing updates with you about student academic progress and attendance. We recognize that as we move into the busy assessment season, at times student schedules are impacted. Our commitment to our students is that we will do our best to maintain our regular schedule and engaging activities in classes through the end of the year. Daily, on-time school attendance remains critical to student well-being and achievement, and we ask for your partnership in ensuring that every student attends every day! Please look for updates on attendance procedures, after school activities, and assessment schedules following spring vacation.
Principal Evaluation Survey
I value your feedback! On Monday, March 18, Chantilly HS parents/guardians were sent an email that included a link to complete the online FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form. This questionnaire is part of the VDOE-mandated Performance Evaluation Program for principals and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. These topics include how the school principal demonstrates/impacts instructional leadership, school climate, management, communication and community relations, culturally responsive and equitable leadership, and professionalism within the school. The survey will be open until April 5. Please look for an email from FCPS Surveys and take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. Your feedback matters and will help inform our future practices.
On behalf of the entire Chantilly Faculty, I wish all of our students and families a restful spring break full of all of the activities and people you love! Chantilly offices will be closed March 25-April 1 and will re-open on April 2. Classes resume for students on Wednesday, April 3 - A Day (1,LS/CC, 5, 7). I look forward to welcoming all of our Chargers back to school after spring vacation.

🏅 Nominations Open for First Class Award for Inclusion Activities
The Advisory Committee for Students with Disabilities (ACSD) is seeking nominations for the First Class Awards. The awards are presented annually to educators, administrators, and students who support, design, and/or implement inclusion activities that result in positive outcomes for students. The ACSD will recognize award winners at the Family Summit on Saturday, April 20.
Nominate an individual who has made an exceptional contribution to inclusive practices in FCPS by Friday, March 22. Email SpecialEdConf@fcps.edu with questions.

A Message from Your SAPS ~ Is Vaping Dangerous?
Vaping has become very popular, especially with young people ages 12+. The number of lung- related issues is rising and its just going to keep rising. As of 2019 57 deaths have been related to vaping . As of January 2020, there have been over 2,000 cases of serious lung diseases in people who vape. Some chemicals in vapes are classified as carcinogens and are linked to cancer at alarming rates. Vaping doesn’t just affect the person vaping; it affects the people around them. There have been cases of accidental consumption of e-juice in children and even adults that led to acute nicotine poisoning. Vaping also harms a growing fetus.
Not only is vaping dangerous because of what it does to the body, its dangerous because vaping devices are prone to “explode, malfunction or catch fire”. This is due to defective batteries or cheaply made vaping devices.
Lightspeed Classroom Management
As part of our commitment to creating a safe and focused learning environment for our students, our school is using a classroom management tool that will help teachers better connect with student devices during classes. We are continuing to expand our use over the coming weeks. This tool will provide teachers with a number of helpful features:
- Easily view student screens in real time from the teacher console to see which students may need guidance or support.
- Focus student attention on a particular website on their device to minimize distractions.
- Pause student access to the internet to focus on other classroom tasks.
We believe this classroom management tool will allow us to maximize class time to support your student’s learning while at school. Please note that student devices will not be monitored outside of school hours. The regular filters remain in place on school devices, but once they are home, teachers cannot monitor students. As parents, we would like to encourage you to sign up for your own Lightspeed reports, which will allow you to see how your child is spending time on the computer during and after school hours.
FAFSA Updates for Seniors and Their Parents/Guardians
There have been several technological challenges with the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)since its launch on December 31, 2023. The latest news is that colleges will not get FAFSA summaries from the U.S. Department of Education until mid-March at the earliest. As a result, colleges won’t be able to give students financial aid award letters based on their FAFSA information until late April to May, at best. Students who applied to a college that uses the CSS Profile may receive financial aid information sooner.
Different media outlets are reporting a growing list of colleges that will push back deadlines for students to accept offers of admission into May and even June. The American Council on Education has a database of colleges and universities that have extended their deadline to commit to enroll. We recommend that all information obtained by a secondary source be confirmed directly with the college or university.

Have You Ordered Your Graduation Yard Sign?
Chantilly High School is proud to partner with Food For Neighbors (FFN) to help feed our local students who deal with food insecurity because even in counties as wealthy as Arlington, Fairfax and Loudoun at least one in four kids in our area are struggling with hunger.
Food for Neighbors is a local organization addressing this problem by collecting food from our community via the Red Bag Program and donating directly to our local schools. The food is then distributed to our students every week through our food pantry.
We hope you will consider participating in the Red Bag food collection program. You can make a difference in a local student’s life by simply adding a few extra items to your shopping cart every 2 months.
Here’s how it works:
- Request a reusable Red Bag here and Food For Neighbors will drop it off at your house.
- Fill the Red Bag with food items that are listed on a tag on that bag.
- Put the Red Bag outside your front door in the morning on the next bag collection day (which is Saturday, April 27th). And don’t worry, they send reminders.
Your Red Bag will be picked up from your house, the food sorted at a local school and delivered directly to the school food pantry at CHS. As an added benefit, you can get a tax deduction for the food that you donate!
With your help, even more kids can be fed. For more information on the Red Bag program click here. Check out what items FFN collects as they are targeted to ready-made, individually packaged food items that students and teens can eat on-the-go or with little preparation.
The organization also offers volunteer opportunities including Driving to pick up filled Red Bags and Sorting the donated food during the Red Bag Day events. Students in all FCPS secondary schools can enroll in the Institute for the Arts. IFTA is a two- or three-week summer Arts enrichment program for students in rising 7th through 12th grades. Students create their own schedules in Art, Music, Theatre, and Dance from nearly 60 courses offered. Transportation is provided from around the county.
