2024 Student Peace Award of Fairfax County

Peace Awards

Senior Phillip Ha was one of 27 recipients of a 2024 Student Peace Award of Fairfax County honored at a reception on March 10.  Rep. Gerry Connolly introduced a Resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives listing all the recipients and recognizing them as “active in promoting peace or removing the causes of conflict.”

As the current president of both Mount Vernon High School’s Asian, Pacific Islander, American Club (APIA Club) and German Club (MVGC), Phillip works for peace through his combined understanding of the transformative power of shared language and his desire to build respectful connections.

Phillip grew up in a non-English speaking Vietnamese household.  As the primary English language learner, he became the household interpreter.  In middle school, he served as translator for a set of Vietnamese twins, newly arrived in the United States.  These experiences gave Phillip the satisfaction of helping others through building connections and set him on the path of studying foreign languages as a way to bridge gaps and foster empathy.

Please join us in congratulating Phillip on this prestigious honor!

This is a difficult-to-earn achievement and incredible distinction given only to schools whose top ensembles receive Superior ratings at assessment. Richard Bacz, Chelsea Huber, and Al Rodriguez all received Superior ratings at assessments. A Blue Ribbon Celebration will occur Friday, March 15th during 5th period to recognize, honor and celebrate MVHS’s outstanding students and musical directors.

Attendance before Spring Break

logo

Please mark your calendars with the important dates below.

Every year, absences spike in the weeks before and after spring break. It’s time to break that cycle!

Please make sure your child is in school every day, right up until vacation starts. Our teachers will be teaching, and our students will be learning. But it’s harder to teach and it’s harder to learn when too many students are absent.
