Flint Hill Updates

Good Afternoon Flint Hill Families,

Students and teachers were very busy this week! Here are a few highlights from around Flint Hill.

Students in grades 4-6 shared their dance routines in PE. The students showed great cooperation, creativity and movement during their performances. In kindergarten, Ms. Callow, the school public health nurse for FHES, visited classrooms to talk to students about toothbrushing and flossing. FHES also had a visit from Region 1 executive principal, Dr. Copeland, who visited classrooms and learned more about our food sharing table program in the cafeteria to reduce food waste and provide access to snacks for students in need.

Students in 6th grade worked with their teachers and Mrs. Rankin to learn how to cite sources for their upcoming exhibition project and 5th graders were hard at work learning about elapsed time in math.

Next week, don't forget that Tuesday, March 5th is a student holiday for the presidential primary. Also, please save the date for FHES Heritage & Traditions Night! See the information below about how your students can participate in the event on Wednesday, April 17th! More information about how to register for the event will be shared soon!

Kindly,

Mr. Montaquila, Principal

Mr. Baker, Assistant Principal

FHES PTA READ-A-THON 2024 - RUNS MARCH 1 - 29!

FHES

The FHES PTA Read-a-Thon is back! Our goal is to encourage your student’s love of reading while raising funds for our school. In the last FHES Read-A-Thon, students read over 100,000 minutes and over $8,000 was raised for the FHES PTA.

When is the Read-A-Thon? The Read-a-thon will occur March 1-29th, 2024. Start tracking your minutes Friday, March 1!

How do I participate? Register your student today here!

Your student can choose to personalize his or her page with a picture, record and track minutes read, and share his or her Read-A-Thon page with extended family and friends to help raise money for FHES. Your student’s Read-A-Thon page can only be viewed by yourself and those who you choose to share the link with via email, Facebook and/or Twitter. Students will receive a free prize for simply creating their FHES Read-A-Thon reader page.

Why do we have a read-a-thon? The PTA will spend an average of $100 per student on resources and programs that directly touch each student at FHES. 100% of the money collected from the Read-A-Thon will be used to fund important school wide programs such as classroom technology, field trips, staff development, reading resources, assemblies and the list goes on.

While raising funds to support our school is one of our goals, the Read-A-Thon is first and foremost about encouraging students to read. Students do not have to collect donations to participate in the Read-A-Thon. Every student is encouraged to participate and everyone who tracks their minutes online or turns in a reading log will have their name featured on the bulletin board in the library. We encourage all students to read and track their minutes.

Prizes for Participation!

Grand Prizes for most minutes read: Extreme sports camera, 3D printing pen, Lunch with 2 friends w/ Principal Montaquila, Gift cards to Bards Alley ,Top reader in the school is entered into a Read-a-Thon-sponsored raffle to win a Disney trip for four people

Yearbook Snap! Share your photos!

For the last couple of years, we have asked the community to upload photos to add to our Yearbook. We received LOTS of submissions! While we can’t use every photo in the yearbook, we would love to offer the opportunity for our families to submit photos again.  Our yearbook theme this year is “You Matter”.

Please upload images to our Yearbook Snap shot. Access Code: flinthill24 In order to collect photos, we ask that they are either camera images or cell phone photos without the Live feature attached. If you upload photos and the ending is .HEIC instead of .JPG we are unable to use them in the yearbook.  We look forward to seeing everyone’s photo in the yearbook this year.

Place your yearbook order today!

Parents/caregivers will receive the FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey Sunday, March 3, from independent research firm K12 Insight. Please participate — your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve practices to best support our students.

Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and our school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, better social skills and behavior, and an increased likelihood of graduating high school.

The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete and will be available in 10 languages. Please visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage for more information. Your voice matters!

Information nights will provide an opportunity to learn about individual school programs, student eligibility, the lottery process, and transportation.

Registration for the 2024-25 elementary magnet lottery is open Tuesday, March 5, through Friday, April 12. Get more information about the schools, their programs, and locations.
