I am very proud to share that for the 10th consecutive year, Chantilly HS has been recognized with the First Amendment Press Freedom Award which recognizes high schools that actively support, teach, and protect First Amendment rights and resposibilities of students and teachers. This award highlights the work of student-run media where student voice is prominent in decisions about content. Read more below!

There are some great opportunities for our students to connect at Chantilly and in the community at upcoming events. Please make note:

Your feedback is critical in helping FCPS to better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs throughout the district. Survey topics include:

  • Welcoming environment
  • Communication
  • Student success
  • Advocacy
  • Family and school partnerships
  • Community partnerships

The survey will be available in English, Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Pashto, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese.

Parents/caregivers will receive the survey link via email from K12 Insight. A public link will also be posted on FCPS’ website. Paper surveys will be available in our front office. Please stay tuned for more information.

💭 Share Your Thoughts on Schoology

FCPS will be conducting voluntary, anonymous surveys on the use of Schoology from Monday, March 11, to Friday, March 22. Surveys will be delivered to:

  • Elementary students (grades 3-6) through the Schoology App Center.
  • Secondary students via email from Naviance.

Student feedback will inform the school division’s use of Schoology and help improve its processes, communication, and professional learning for staff. FCPS’ Instructional Services Department will also be reaching out to families through focus groups.

Please contact Schoology@fcps.edu if you have questions.

As always, I welcome your feedback, questions, and suggestions. Please with me here. I look forward to connecting with you at Chantilly very soon.

Spring 2024 SEL Screener March 1 during LS 8

Students in grades 9-12 use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. These skills include achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success.

The screener measures student skills, strengths, and needs across the following topics:

  • Self-Management & Responsible Decision Making
  • Social Awareness & Relationship Skills
  • Emotion Regulation
  • Supportive Relationships
  • Belonging
  • Cultural Awareness & Action *grades 6-12 only
  • Challenging Feelings

Chantilly HS students who were not opted out will complete the Spring Wellness Screener on March 1, 2024 during LS 8.  We are anticipating families with SIS ParentVue accounts will see results in early May. Families without ParentVue accounts will receive results via USPS as they have in years past around this time. Once we have an updated timeline, we will provide communication via this weekly message.  For more information, please visit this webpage.

Academic Advising Mini-Conferences (rising 10-12th grade only)

Academic Advising is in full swing at Chantilly HS, and we’re excited to offer mini-conferences for families this year.  These conferences provide the opportunity for students and parents to meet briefly with their school counselor for the purpose of face-to-face discussion around course selections for the 24-25 school year. The intent of these conferences is to both:

1) provide additional opportunity for school-home partnering around academic advising

2) improve accuracy of staffing needs before decisions impacting teachers must be made in March.

The mini-conferences will be held on:

  • Monday March 4 between 8:30-11 and 1:45-3:15 and
  • Wednesday March 6 between 3:30pm-6:30pm

It is important to us that each student takes courses that are challenging for them while also allowing for balance between academics and outside demands and interests.

You must reserve a spot through Signup Genius (see link below). One spot per student.

Directions:

  • Use the embedded sign-up genius link.  Find your student’s counselor and your preferred time slot
  • Choose the 10-minute time slot that works for you.
  • In the “My Comment” section that comes up after you choose the desired time, please put your student’s name and then hit “Sign Up Now”.
  • If you have more than one student at Chantilly, you may sign up for a second slot. Please put a different student name in each time slot.

If you sign up for a spot and your plans change, please be sure to delete your appointment so others can use that time slot.  We look forward to collaborating with you and your child and we begin our preparations for the 2024-25 school year.

Eating Disorder Parent Information

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.
