Thank you, Bus Drivers!

Bus Driver Appreciation Day

February 23, 2024

Happy Friday Fairfax Family and Friends,

I hope your three-day weekend kicked off with an amazing start! It has been an action-packed week at Fairfax. A BIG REMINDER - Quarter 3 moves fast, and we are already at the halfway point, which means you have four more weeks of focus, late afternoon bus options, and pre-planned Lion Times that will prepare you for acceleration and intervention. Parents, you are encouraged to check Schoology and access ParentVue to ensure your students have a plan for success and support. Today in our Lion Time we did grade checks with your students because as the Spring temperatures begin to rise, we look forward to students grades rising, as well. Attendance matters every day, and we need you in school learning!

Our student athletes have been unstoppable, and we couldn't be more excited for our Winter Sports teams and coaches. FHS secured the Basketball District Championship, Girls Swim claimed multiple state titles, and Wrestling came home with lots of brass (including a new state champion). It was PAWSome to see our gymnastic super star in competition at the state level. Academic wins were also happening as our Science Olympiads took home a trophy at UPenn. GO LIONS!

One band, one sound was going down at the FHS Band Assessment concert and they sounded superb. Tonight, our Academy Dance Program presents, "Visionary Movement" which will raise funds for Dance Exchange, a community dance program. Our all-state chorus director and her students are currently attending The American Choral Directors Association's National Conference and Honor Choir Symposium. Orchestra and Chorus will share their assessment showcase this week.

We had the opportunity to thank our bus drivers and acknowledge their hard work on National Bus Driver Appreciation Day. Our PTSA is always inspiring, and our parents offer unwavering commitment to the school, YOU ARE APPRECIATED. Our student equity stakeholders met for a retreat and began planning impact events for the remainder of the school. This student group is committed to elevating diversity, equity, and inclusion at FHS. Next week we will continue celebrating Black History Month with a spirit week and student lead activities.

We are continuously committed to growing, learning, and supporting.

Thank you for your partnership,

A special congratulations to Sadie and Sophie who broke numerous school records this season and they both have earned All-American status which is the highest tier for high school athletes in the country. Lastly, a HUGE shout out to Cody Schneider who qualified for the VHSL State Dive meet where he placed 10th in the state!

At the VHSL State Wrestling Tournament, our wresting team finished 6th in the State! This is the 2nd highest program finish in the history of our school! FAFSA Updates for Seniors and Their Families

There have been several technological challenges with the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) since its launch on December 31, 2023. The latest news is that colleges will not get FAFSA summaries from the U.S. Department of Education until mid-March at the earliest. As a result, colleges won’t be able to give students financial aid award letters based on their FAFSA information until late April to May, at best. Students who applied to a college that uses the CSS Profile may receive financial aid information sooner.

Different media outlets are reporting a growing list of colleges that will push back deadlines for students to accept offers of admission into May and even June. The American Council on Education has a database of colleges and universities that have extended their deadline to commit to enroll. We recommend that all information obtained by a secondary source be confirmed directly with the college or university.

If you are a caregiver or student with questions or persistent issues filling out the FAFSA, consider scheduling a free appointment with our partners at College Access Fairfax. Email Appointments@CollegeAccessFairfax.org. All FAFSA help provided by your school or College Access Fairfax is free.

💻 NOVA Virtual Sessions for Seniors and Their Families

Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) is offering virtual information and application sessions. Information sessions will provide an overview of NOVA and the opportunities, services, and resources designed to connect high school seniors to the NOVA Nighthawk Community.

Sessions are open to all FCPS seniors and their families. For questions, email admissions@nvcc.edu or call 703-323-3000.
