A note from Dr. Goodloe

Dear Charger Families,

Happy Friday!  Wishing each of you a relaxing and fun long weekend ahead as we recognize President's Day on Monday, February 19. I am currently away from school taking a brief vacation and will return to Chantilly on February 21.  During my absence, Kristi Layman, Assistant Principal for SS4 will serve as Acting Principal. Please reach out to her or any of the members of our administrative team for assistance.

Student Drop Off Reminders - Kindercare, West Lot and Door 4:

We are very grateful to our community neighbors for often sharing their spaces with Chantilly including Kindercare and the Chantilly Regional Library. Please note that while students may park in numbered Library and West Lot spaces assigned to them, general parking at Kindercare, West Lot, and the Library for drop off / pick up of students is not permitted.

  • Please follow all signs for Kiss and Ride and drop off locations if driving your student to school.
  • If your student is dropped off at Door 4, you must continue around the building to exit at the light at Stringfellow Road. Do not U-turn!
  • Do not drop off/pick up students in West Lot, Kindercare or along Stringfellow Rd.  Safety is our priority.
  • Kindercare will be reporting violators to the Fairfax County Police and you will be ticketed or towed.

Thank you for assisting us in supporting a safe and orderly arrival and dismissal at Chantilly HS.

It is great to be a Chantilly Charger! This week:

  • We celebrated Friendship February with staff by surprising secret pals with treats throughout the week! Students recognized each other through flower grams sponsored by our SGA. It has been wonderful to feel the "love" in our community!
  • Congratulations to SS5 Assistant Principal Maura Edwards and her family as they welcomed a baby girl into the world earlier this week. Brigid Louise Edwards was born on February 12. Mom and baby are doing great! Ms. Edwards will be on leave through Memorial Day.  Amanda Lombardi will serve as SS5 Acting AP during her absence.
  • Thank you to our Chantilly PTSA for hosting an important workshop for parents and caregivers on the health impacts of vaping and tobacco use on teens. We appreciated the opportunity to engage with our Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist (SAPS), Stacey King on this important health issue.
  • Good luck to all of our athletes and students engaged in performing arts and co-curricular activities as they compete in state, region, and district tournaments and competitions this weekend!  See the Recognitions section below for some additional highlights.

Welcome New Charger Staff!

Over the past few weeks we have had several new staff members join our school community. We are thrilled to welcome the following new Chargers:

  • Sadia Akhtar, ESOL Teacher
  • Margaret Carson, Testing IA
  • Bobby Edwards, CTE Business Teacher
  • Jillian Domenech, Assessment Coach
  • Jennifer Kudlacik, AA in SubSchool 1

Spring 2024 SEL Screener March 1 during LS 8

Students in grades 9-12 use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. These skills include achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success.

The screener measures student skills, strengths, and needs across the following topics:

  • Self-Management & Responsible Decision Making
  • Social Awareness & Relationship Skills
  • Emotion Regulation
  • Supportive Relationships
  • Belonging
  • Cultural Awareness & Action *grades 6-12 only
  • Challenging Feelings

Chantilly HS students who were not opted out will complete the Spring Wellness Screener on March 1, 2024 during LS 8.  We are anticipating families with SIS ParentVue accounts will see results in early May. Families without ParentVue accounts will receive results via USPS as they have in years past around this time. Once we have an updated timeline, we will provide communication via this weekly message.  For more information, please visit this webpage.

Academic Advising Mini-Conferences (rising 10-12th grade only)

Academic Advising is in full swing at Chantilly HS, and we’re excited to offer mini-conferences for families this year.  These conferences provide the opportunity for students and parents to meet briefly with their school counselor for the purpose of face-to-face discussion around course selections for the 24-25 school year. The intent of these conferences is to both:

1) provide additional opportunity for school-home partnering around academic advising

2) improve accuracy of staffing needs before decisions impacting teachers must be made in March.

The mini-conferences will be held on:

  • Monday March 4 between 8:30-11 and 1:45-3:15 and
  • Wednesday March 6 between 3:30pm-6:30pm

It is important to us that each student takes courses that are challenging for them while also allowing for balance between academics and outside demands and interests.

You must reserve a spot through Signup Genius (see link below). One spot per student.

Directions:

  • Use the embedded sign-up genius link.  Find your student’s counselor and your preferred time slot
  • Choose the 10-minute time slot that works for you.
  • In the “My Comment” section that comes up after you choose the desired time, please put your student’s name and then hit “Sign Up Now”.
  • If you have more than one student at Chantilly, you may sign up for a second slot. Please put a different student name in each time slot.

If you sign up for a spot and your plans change, please be sure to delete your appointment so others can use that time slot.  We look forward to collaborating with you and your child and we begin our preparations for the 2024-25 school year.

Notice of Mandatory Immunization for Rising 12th Graders

In accordance with state and local law, FCPS requires students entering 12th grade to have received a dose of Meningococcal ACWY vaccine AFTER the age of 16. Doses received prior to age 16 do not count towards this requirement. If your student’s dose was received prior to age 16 they will need another dose. Immunization records must be submitted to the Student Services office before August 1, 2024 to allow time to update student records before the start of school. Immunization records can be delivered to the main office to the attention of Liz Fisher, Registrar, OR your student may hand deliver the record to her in the Student Services office (next to Subschool 3). Please contact Liz Fisher at befisher@fcps.edu with any questions.

Eating Disorder Parent Information

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.

No Cost Therapy for High Schoolers

High school students can access virtual mental health services at no cost through an FCPS program with Hazel Health. Hazel Health therapists are licensed and also trained in teen-specific challenges.

Students can be referred by a guardian or designated staff member and participate in weekly video therapy sessions. The therapists will work with students until they achieve their therapy goals, or they can help connect the family with long-term mental health services in the community if needed.

Learn how to opt your students into this service.

Inclusive Open Gym

Sully Community Center welcomes the teens with disabilities and their parents and/or caregivers to join us for Open Gym every second Friday of the month! This will be a monthly drop-in session of basketball, pickleball, and badminton, from 7:00-8:30 every second Friday.

This program begins in January!

All that's required is a free* Neighborhood and Community Services Membership. Need help creating one? We are glad to help!
