Principal Message

Dear Terraset Families:

Our students certainly are starting off the 3rd Quarter strong! We have been enjoying many learning opportunities including celebrating and deepening our understandings of Black History Month, our 5th grade Tigers visited the planetarium, and our Tiger Ambassadors in 5th and 6th grades took a field trip to George Mason University.

This week, we will have opportunities to celebrate National School Counseling week. Be sure to participate in our Spirit Week, (details below)! Some ways you can celebrate Ms. Perkins and Ms. Young are:

  • Send a kind e-mail
  • Make a card
  • Say thank you

Finally, I hope you will be able to join us on Wednesday night from 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. for our February PTO meeting. Our own Elise Bender and Maggie Johnson, Kindergarten teachers, will be presenting on Conscious Discipline and you won’t want to miss this meaningful information!

Yours in partnership,

Katie Aldridge

Progress Reports

Progress reports are being sent home with students today.
Please see the FCPS website for more information and language translations of the progress report.  If you have any questions about your child's progress report, please contact your child's teacher.

Survey of Preschool Children

If you have a preschool-aged child who is eligible for kindergarten for the 2024-2025 school year, please use this link to access the form. Return completed forms to the office no later than February 29, 2024.

If you know of any children in your neighborhood who also have rising kindergartners, please share this information or ask them to reach out to Shannon Johnson at 703-390-5600.

Virginia law, Section 22.1-254 requires that children who will reach their fifth birthday on or before September 30, 2024, must enroll in kindergarten for the 2024-2025 school year. If your child turns five on or before 09/30/2024 and you do not wish to enroll him/her in kindergarten, please let us know in writing.

The form can be submitted to Shannon Johnson via email or by dropping it off at the main office.

Thank you for your assistance in helping us identify school-age children.

Student Transfer Renewal Application Opens February 15

student transfer is valid for one year only. A parent or guardian must submit a renewal application each year for student transfer consideration. A renewal application may be submitted for students who continue to meet the same student transfer criteria as indicated on the original student transfer request. For students no longer meeting the same student transfer criteria, a new transfer request must be submitted.

All students will be considered eligible for student transfer renewal unless the principal indicates a student is not eligible for renewal in the Online Student Transfer Application Admin View or the transfer type does not allow for renewal e.g. graduating, moving from one level to another, or family relocation.

Letters from the principal will be automatically generated from the online student transfer application in February for students eligible and not eligible for renewal and sent to the enrolling parents primary email address.

For detailed information regarding the renewal process, please visit the Online Student Transfer Application: Renewal Process webpage.

Annual English Language Proficiency Test

Federal legislation requires that all students identified as English learners (ELs) are assessed annually to monitor their progress and proficiency in English. In Virginia, all divisions use the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs for this purpose.

The WIDA ACCESS for ELLs is aligned with the WIDA English Language Development standards and assesses English in the four language domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The assessment will:

  • Determine students’ English language proficiency level and eligibility for EL services and testing accommodations.
  • Help students and families understand students’ current level of English language proficiency along a developmental continuum.
  • Provide teachers with information they can use to plan for and support student learning.
  • Determine whether ELs have met English language proficiency criteria and will be designated former ELs.

All ELs, including those who have opted out of EL services, participate annually in the ELP assessment until they reach English language proficiency criteria (ELP level 6). Alternate assessment formats are available for certain students with disabilities.
