It has been a very busy week at Chantilly full of great learning, performances, and accomplishments. Some highlights:

  • We had a visit from Region 5 Executive Principal, Jay Pearson. It was a pleasure talking with students in Ms. Shankar's Chemistry Honors class and hearing the beautiful music in Mr. Mynes' Orchestra and Mr. Maloney's Band classes.
  • Chantilly's Got Talent was a huge success. Thanks to our Leadership students for hosting and producing a great show of Charger talent. I am so in awe of the many strengths of our students. Congratulations to this year's winners, see below.
  • Theater One Acts - Northern Region Runner Up- Congratulations on placing 2nd in the Northern Region and to our very own Bridget Dombro for being recognized with the Outstanding Actor Award! Our students shared an outstanding performance.
  • Charger Wrestling - Northern Region Team champions!. We had seven finalists, 4 Region individual champions and two athletes, Carter Shin (most pins) and Zeke Keel (Outstanding Wrestler) received individual awards.
  • Student Recognitions - We recognized students this week who were nominated by teachers and staff for demonstrating growth, commitment, and leading the CHARGE at Chantilly. Congratulations to our On a Roll recipients.
  • Planning for 24-25 is underway! Chantilly instructional leaders have been collaborating to begin the process of scheduling and staffing for 24-25. We are grateful to our school counselors for their ongoing engagement with students during this busy academic advising season.

As always, I welcome your feedback, questions, and suggestions. Share your observations, suggestions, questions and celebrations with me here. I look forward to connecting with you at Chantilly very soon.

Charger Headlines:

National School Counseling Week February 5-9! School counselors are engaged in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents; work in partnership with families as they encounter challenges of raising children in today’s world; focus on positive ways to enhance students’ academic, career, and social/emotional development; and work with teachers and other educators to provide an education system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves. School counselors are certified, experienced educators with a master’s degree in school counseling. The combination of their training and experience make them an integral part of the total educational program. As the number of students with mental health concerns continues to skyrocket post-pandemic, our counselors and clinical team are working in close collaboration with teachers and families to help kids return to wellness and academic engagement.

Our commitments to our students, families and faculty are:

  • Chantilly HS Student Services Department encourages every student to find their voice and explore their strengths and interests so that they are equipped to lead fulfilling, healthy, and productive lives
  • The mission of CHS Student Services Department is to prepare students to succeed as learners and as global citizens.  We work collaboratively with parents and teachers to support each student as they find their pathway through high school and beyond

February is National Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month.

Chantilly High School proudly offers CTE courses in the content areas of Business & Information Technology, Marketing, and Technology & Engineering.  Each content area supports a Career & Technical Education Student Organization (CTSO) including DECA, An Association of Marketing Students, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), and Technology Student Association (TSA).  Click here for more information.

During this session we will discuss mathematics graduation requirements and how to support students in navigating the various course offerings currently available in FCPS.

Students and their families may start thinking about what course pathways are available beginning in middle school. Join us to learn more.

Spring 2024 SEL Screener March 1 during LS 8

Students in grades 9-12 use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. These skills include achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success.

The screener measures student skills, strengths, and needs across the following topics:

  • Self-Management & Responsible Decision Making
  • Social Awareness & Relationship Skills
  • Emotion Regulation
  • Supportive Relationships
  • Belonging
  • Cultural Awareness & Action *grades 6-12 only
  • Challenging Feelings

Chantilly HS students who were not opted out will complete the Spring Wellness Screener on March 1, 2024 during LS 8.  We are anticipating families with SIS ParentVue accounts will see results in early May. Families without ParentVue accounts will receive results via USPS as they have in years past around this time. Once we have an updated timeline, we will provide communication via this weekly message.  For more information, please visit this webpage.

Academic Advising Mini-Conferences (rising 10-12th grade only)

Academic Advising is in full swing at Chantilly HS, and we’re excited to offer mini-conferences for families this year.  These conferences provide the opportunity for students and parents to meet briefly with their school counselor for the purpose of face-to-face discussion around course selections for the 24-25 school year. The intent of these conferences is to both:

1) provide additional opportunity for school-home partnering around academic advising

2) improve accuracy of staffing needs before decisions impacting teachers must be made in March.

The mini-conferences will be held on:

  • Monday March 4 between 8:30-11 and 1:45-3:15 and
  • Wednesday March 6 between 3:30pm-6:30pm

It is important to us that each student takes courses that are challenging for them while also allowing for balance between academics and outside demands and interests.

You must reserve a spot through Signup Genius (see link below). One spot per student.

Directions:

  • Use the embedded sign-up genius link.  Find your student’s counselor and your preferred time slot
  • Choose the 10-minute time slot that works for you.
  • In the “My Comment” section that comes up after you choose the desired time, please put your student’s name and then hit “Sign Up Now”.
  • If you have more than one student at Chantilly, you may sign up for a second slot. Please put a different student name in each time slot.

If you sign up for a spot and your plans change, please be sure to delete your appointment so others can use that time slot.  We look forward to collaborating with you and your child and we begin our preparations for the 2024-25 school year.

Notice of Mandatory Immunization for Rising 12th Graders

In accordance with state and local law, FCPS requires students entering 12th grade to have received a dose of Meningococcal ACWY vaccine AFTER the age of 16. Doses received prior to age 16 do not count towards this requirement. If your student’s dose was received prior to age 16 they will need another dose. Immunization records must be submitted to the Student Services office before August 1, 2024 to allow time to update student records before the start of school. Immunization records can be delivered to the main office to the attention of Liz Fisher, Registrar, OR your student may hand deliver the record to her in the Student Services office (next to Subschool 3). Please contact Liz Fisher at befisher@fcps.edu with any questions.

No Cost Therapy for High Schoolers

High school students can access virtual mental health services at no cost through an FCPS program with Hazel Health. Hazel Health therapists are licensed and also trained in teen-specific challenges.

Students can be referred by a guardian or designated staff member and participate in weekly video therapy sessions. The therapists will work with students until they achieve their therapy goals, or they can help connect the family with long-term mental health services in the community if needed.

Learn how to opt your students into this service.

Inclusive Open Gym

Sully Community Center welcomes the teens with disabilities and their parents and/or caregivers to join us for Open Gym every second Friday of the month! This will be a monthly drop-in session of basketball, pickleball, and badminton, from 7:00-8:30 every second Friday.

This program begins in January!
