EMPOWERMENT:  2024 GIRLS STATE PROGRAM

Who: Female members of the Class of 2025 who are US citizens or legal residents of the US and have an interest in municipal and state government. The best applicants illustrate leadership, character, scholarship, loyalty, service to their school and community, and an interest in civic engagement. Participants must be US citizens or legal residents of the US (details on application). Delegates should be able to cope with a very strenuous schedule of activities (there’s not a lot of free time!).

What:  Since the inception of the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program in 1937, nearly one million young women nationwide have had the opportunity to learn firsthand how their state and local governments work. The program has grown to some 20,000 participants annually. This adventure in Americanism is sponsored annually by the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) with the cooperation of many civic clubs, school groups, and community-minded businesses. Through this program, the ALA hopes to make our young citizens realize they are an essential part of their government and are responsible for its character and success.

When: Sunday, June 16 through Saturday, June 22, 2024

Where: Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia

Why: ALA Virginia Girls State provides participants an opportunity to learn, in a few days, the mechanics, objectives, and ideals of democracy. “Learning by doing” is the keynote to the success of this program.

For details on the activities of the week, visit: https://www.vagirlsstate.org/your-own-government/

Application deadline 3:30 pm, Wednesday, February 7, 2024.
