Hughes News January 12, 2024

Dear Team Langston Hughes:

Again, Happy New Year! Welcome, 2024!  It is hard to believe that we are bringing the first semester to an end – halfway through the school year.

With each new year comes a chance for a new start. I want to assure you that high expectations in academics set from the beginning of the year will continue as we approach second semester. Course content is progressing; therefore, it is important for students to keep up with their schoolwork. Parents, please be sure to check your child’s progress on ParentVUE weekly. School counselors will soon visit classrooms to discuss course selections for next year.

Finally, I want to reiterate my gratitude for your continued support and cooperation.  I feel confident that 2024 brings a greater sense of belonging and a renewed perspective on all of the values that make Langston Hughes Middle School such a special place.

Warm regards,

Principal Mizell

2nd Quarter Report Cards and SIS ParentVUE

The last day of the second quarter/first semester is Thursday, January 25th. The Grade Book and Report Card modules in SIS ParentVUE will be closed on January 25th – February 5th for teachers to update final 2nd quarter and semester grades.

If you do not already have a ParentVUE SIS account, it is very important for you to activate this feature to support your child’s academic success. Through ParentVUE, you are able to monitor your student’s attendance, grades, and assignments at any time. Once you have activated a ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. In addition, all students in the same family can be accessed through the same ParentVUE account. SIS/ParentVUE can be accessed using an app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device. Do you need help creating a SIS ParentVue account? This video walks you through the steps on how to do so. Watch this video to learn how to set up your account. You can also find out more about SIS ParentVUE here: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/student-information-system-sis-fcps/sis-parent-account-overview

Second Semester Schedules

Second semester begins Monday, January 29th.. Students will be able to see their schedules in SIS StudentVUE on Friday, January 26th at 4:00 pm. Students will also be given a printed copy of their new schedule.  If students are taking semester classes, their new classes will begin on January 29th. For some students taking semester classes, their PE class period may change in order to accommodate their second semester elective. Student schedules are set, and we do not make schedule changes during the school year other than for academic reasons.

Attendance Matters

  • Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

We often notice more empty seats in our classrooms as winter break approaches. This year let's work together to nurture a rock-solid attendance habit. Every hour of every school day is a unique opportunity for students to learn, connect, and grow.

A big thank you to:

  • 🌟 Students who show up every day and the parents/caregivers supporting them.
  • 👩‍🏫 Teachers who create a welcoming environment for learning.
  • 👨‍💼 Administrators providing a safe and engaging place to grow.
  • 👏 Bus drivers, support staff, and volunteers lending a helping hand to all our learners.

If you or your child need support, please reach out to our school social worker or family liaison. If your child is not feeling well, please refer to the When Should I Keep My Child Home? webpage for guidance.

. Visit FCPS’ website for more attendance resources
